Could it be that the file is too big, in which case how do I shorten it?

Most likely your sound file is already compressed, so there is no "make it shorter" except to chop off parts and throw them away.

Your best bet is to upload the file to a sharing site, like Dropbox or Google Drive, then send the URL of the file in the message.
