Welcome to the forums. When you plug in the device, do you get a system notification for charging?

From what I've read, Android doesn't support NTFS. The drives would need to be formatted as exFAT to work on Android. exFAT also has full support (read and write) on Windows and Mac OS. From a quick Google search just now, it looks like you can add NTFS support to Android. Not sure if it requires root or not, or the difficulty level. So I'll leave it to you to research if that's what you need to do.

This thread might be helpful. Not sure if it is your thread or not-- it also says "AC Question". On that note-- does the username "AC Question" mean that it's a guest post?

I have the same problem. It shows me an option
Like
○ transfer files
○ transfer image
○ Connect to a MIDI device
○Charge this phome
●Charge connected device

No matter what i choose, the hard drive will disconnect and ill start all over again.

I have the same issue. Any fix ever found?

I am not able to connect formatted HDD to my S8+. I assumed they were formatted in NTFS but when I connected the HDD's to Windows they all said exFAT format. Ive tried with USB otg and with dex, no luck. The only thing that happens when I connect with USB otg is ES File Explorer opens. I can see the drive but when I click on it, it fails to load anything.

You should have first had to give permission to access the phone.

What if you use Samsung Smart Sync that allows backup and copy - after you allow access.

I see what everyone else was talking about now. It was hidden in the background. In Dex all options are greyed out but "charge connected device". Straight to the phone I have all options, but when I choose "transfer files" it starts over again. I actually was able to get one drive to work somehow. Smart Switch did nothing as far as I can tell.

In Settings, Device Maintenance after enabling by tapping on the build number, check how or what happens when phone connects via USB.

You install Smart Switch on Windows.

I dont have access to a windows machine right now. But it looks like the same drive that worked yesterday, 1tb toshiba, shows up and works every time. The other drive I have access to, WD connected through a HDD docking station, doesnt show up. That's when I have them connected directly to the phone.

If I try to connect the toshiba to the dex dock, it clicks. Maybe dex doesnt supply enough power?

UPDATE: I think I've proven two things. The Dex dock doesn't have enough power to provide for the dock AND an external hard drive. I believe this because I connected the Hard Drive first to a powered USB hub and the hub to dex, and the toshiba drive shows up with no clicking.

I also believe the HDD docking station doesn't work with the phone in any way. Maybe these just won't work or maybe it needs to have a certain chipset.

I had the same problem, I was reading this forum and thought to myself "what if I connect portable hdd to dex station?"

And guess what, it works perfect

I was freaking out as well, but am very happy now!!!!! Long live dex!!! Hahaha

OTG connector might be the culprit, which came along with the phone.

I just bought a local OTG connector and plugged in the hard drive. It detected the hard drive.

NTFS format is good bcoz, you can connect it to TV as well as mobile (using few apps).

ES File Explorer is not required if you have the below mentioned apps.

To connect Samsung S9/S8/J6/A6 to hard disk (NTFS format), you require:

-OTG connector

-Total Commander app

-Microsoft exFat/NTFS usb app (Trial= 2 days, Rs.49=Full license)

Note: You do not need any external power supply (Y type) cables for this. Just plug n play.
