I just got thru cancelling my plan & Evo with Sprint

Sprint can do the ESN swap regardless of where purchased.

Hrmm, so since you purchased it through an affiliate (it is like purchasing it at Best Buy) so I don't know if Sprint directly will be able to help you. They can't switch it and cancel the line unless you return the phone but you didn't buy the phone directly through Sprint so would have to be the place you bought it from.

I'd contact Sprint directly to see if there is anything they can do anyway if you already haven't.

A question:

Im planning to port my old AT&T number (got a new line from RS, since I wanted to try before commiting to a new contract) to my new Sprint account. Is it a matter of just me calling Sprint CS and asking them to switch me to my old AT&T number? I cannot afford to lose my number (more than 500 customers have my number), and my local RS rep told me that this could be done no problem... is this true?

My g/f had AT&T when we got our EVOs, they switched it at RS, it took about 5 minutes to get transfered.

You may just want to go back to RS and have it done as they have access to both AT&T and Sprint systems whereas Sprint will have to put a request in to AT&T for the number.

Same thing kind of happened to me, i had a bb bold on sprint that i got from best buy. My 30th day trial was up on the 14th of june and i wanted the evo and best buy was sold out for a month and a half in advance so i knew it would be after the 14th before i could receive my phone ....So i call sprint customer service and the lady told me to order the phone over the phone then return the bb bold to best buy. So thats what i did and i paid next day air to get my phone by monday. I get my phone on monday and call to swap my number long story short they told me i couldnt and escalated me. Then spoke to someone else and he told me i couldnt that he could lose his job because it would cause equipment issues down the road and he suggested that i go get my bold back return my evo go back to best buy and swap it then WTF! After 40 mins of this he xferred me to his supervisor who said he could do this no problem but he had to check some thing and asked if he could place me on hold, sure i said happily since he assured me that this could get this done, 20 mins later the music stops and a busy tone comes on (sigh). I see that their phone disconnected so i call back UBER pissed demanding for a supervisor right away. The guy calms me down get me to talk and simply said he didnt understand why they even escalated me it was pointless and he could do it no prob 20mins later my evo was activated with my SAME number and the bb bold has been returned. I was so exhausted and just happy that it got done didnt bother asking for any compensation, i just kept thanking the guy for being my hero. soo i would most definitely try again.

It shouldn't be a problem for you. I don't know why I'm having difficulties.

To explain a little clearer as to what happened to me...

I've got an ancient Motorola Razr. My permanent residence is in Florida, but I'm working out of state. I went to a Sprint store last year to upgrade (outside of Florida), but they said they were an affiliate and couldn't give me an upgrade AND keep my number.

That said, when the Evo came out, the local stores were sold out and I didn't want to deal with that affiliate store again, so I went to Sprint Corporate directly. I ordered the Evo and the 450 Everything Data plan with the added wifi hotspot fee minus a hefty upgrade discount.

Sprint surprised me by getting me the Evo even faster than I expected and I was overjoyed. When I went to activate the phone, I found out that they had not ported my number over... instead, they added the plan and Evo as a new line of service.

I told them I simply wanted an upgrade from the Motorola Razr and have my phone number ported to the Evo.

The representative politely told me she couldn't do that. I would have to accept the new phone number and contract if I wanted to keep the Evo, while canceling the Motorola line and losing my old number.

I asked why she couldn't just port the number and cancel the Motorola line and she said that it had to do with the serial number on the Evo and that they couldn't just change an established phone number on it.

I asked to speak to her supervisor (I should note that I try to be polite to phone staff, so I wasn't yelling or cursing or anything along those lines). The supervisor reiterated what the previous person had said.

So, options were...
1. Have the Motorola turned off and lose my old number & accept the Evo and the new phone number.
2. Keep the Motorola under my grandfathered contract and return the Evo while canceling my new contract/plan.

I opted for #2.

Now, I can reorder from Sprint corporate... which would require being put on a waiting list and risk another "error" regarding upgrade versus new line or I could buy it from an affiliate and also be put on a waiting list.

I don't know why the affiliate initially told me they couldn't port my number last year. This whole scenario I'm undergoing right now sounds suspiciously like what they were talking about before. Perhaps they can't port numbers if a majority of calls are coming from a different area code than the original? I just don't know.

I love Sprint's plans. I hate AT&T's. I love the iPhone, but I'm loathe to sign up with AT&T to get one. I'm probably going to get the Evo... but arrggh.

Braaainz, if you squeak loud enough they'll find someone with enough "oil" to clear that ESN and activate it under your original #.

I used to have a cell phone review site a long while ago with 2 lines from Sprint. I would switch phones like crazy, I used to run in to similar problems to this and would just call back here and there and there again if I had to.

THANKS!

It's nice to know I'm not the only one and also that things worked out for you in the end. I'm wondering if perhaps the customer service reps I dealt with just didn't know how to do what I needed... or (more likely), I was calling at the end of their work day and they just wanted me off the phone.

So have you tried again or have you already sent the phone back? Did you ever activate it?

It was "activated" for all of a few seconds... Sprint was activating it when I found out about the "added line".

I'm going to try in the morning... hopefully with some new service reps.

I did do a google about this and I found this!

Verizon/Sprint: Can't port numbers "over state line" (out of state area code) ??? [Archive] - SprintUsers.com

Ok... a customer who was on Sprint and bought some Verizon phones wanted to port his Sprint numbers(out of state) to the Verizon phones. Coworker called up Verizon. Verizon said 'NO'. Reason: "Sent the request to Sprint and they denied it because it's an area code from a different state"

Apparently, Sprint has issues with out of state area codes. I personally don't think it would apply to me because my Sprint billing address remains in the same area code as my original number... but that sounds like what the affiliate store initially told me.

I've heard of affiliates not wanting to do certain things with accounts because they get little to no monetary gain from it so ends up just being a lot of work for nothing. Be it handling a repair or upgrading an account they only get like $10 back from Sprint so it's just not worth it. So a lot of them have policies where they're authorized to do certain things by Sprint, but that particular establishment doesn't do it.

It's probably just coincidence that Sprint corporate crossed up your order. I would have them note this mistake and try them again. They might throw a credit towards you for the mixup. Also, the wait for a new phone shouldn't be that long so I wouldn't worry about that.

I dont see how this is at all possible. For ****s and giggles i swapped my evo to my wifes number and back with no questions asked. The whole process took 30 mins. Most of which was waiting for a rep.... You can put that phone on any number on your account you want.

Right, they will do that, but the OP doesn't want the second line, they only want one line. Getting the EVO on the new line makes it so there is a 2-year contract on that line so to cancel it they would have to pay ETF or return the phone.

Okay, following the advice of posters here, I called Sprint back late that night. I got a wonderful customer service rep who was willing to help me. She didn't understand why the previous rep and supervisor failed to do so.

I only have a cellphone for phone service, so she gave me instructions on how to try and port the number myself if her attempt failed. It failed and my attempt to do so also failed. Apparently, her instructions were for phones other than the Evo. Anyway, I sped off to work and snuck in after hours to call her back. Unfortunately, I can't get cell service there (the building is shielded), which made things more difficult.

She transferred me to a technical expert who got me up and running! Both representatives called me back (the first one even after she had gotten off-shift) to make absolutely sure that everything worked. Now THAT is customer service! I still don't understand what the problem was originally.

The only concern I might have is that the first customer service rep and supervisor have sent out a return kit to me. Failing to return equipment might incur a $200 fine. My "good" rep told me that she has documented everything and if I'm fined, it should be an easy matter to have the charges dropped (I hope).

So, I'm using my sexy Evo! Definitely smaller than what I thought it was going to be like... fits my giant sized hands perfectly!

I'm currently using the phone's wifi router to send this on my laptop. Good speed on the router... seems to be about the same speed as I got on my bluetooth phone as modem with the Razr.

I was expecting to have some frustrations getting to use the phone (I'm a Mac owner and love how user-friendly Apple products are), but it is far easier than I ever conceived. I still haven't tried to sync the phone to my computer to transfer music/audiobooks/videos... so there's still some room to criticize for now ;)

Battery life on the Evo is better than what I heard about from the initial reviews. Like many other posters, I wonder if it is a hollow criticism. I did buy two batteries and the first one (the one that came with the phone) did seem to go thru power quickly... but I only had it on for a brief period after charging it. I charged the replacement battery and have been using that and I had over 12 hours with light to moderate usage including the wifi connection, watching online video, emails, downloading apps, phone conversations, etc. So, I am more than pleased as to the battery life.

Great news! I also heard a lot of complaints about Android from pre people but this phone and the android ui is great.

I know your problem is solved now, but the word "port" doesn't even Need to come up unless changing providers. All it was is upgrading your line and esn swapping. But the billing of the unit is the actual unit is where problems arise in this situation. BTW never ever deal with an affiliate.

I have had a similar problem as the OP with THREE new EVOs.

My problem is perhaps even worse, though. Not only do I have to return the phones that I have in my hand, just to get other ones back at some future date whenever they become available, but they will not switch me back to my old plan because it's no longer offered by Sprint! So I'm stuck with a new more expensive plan and old equipment that cannot cannot make use of the features of the new plan!

I have spend HOURS arguing with Sprint about all this and I have talked to MULTIPLE supervisors. I have suggested 10 different ways to accomplish what I want:

1. Keep the EVOs
2. Keep my old phone numbers
3. Get the instant and mail-in rebates as posted on Sprint's website.

but they will not budge one tiny bit. I know it's BS because they can change phone numbers any time they want... at one point they claimed I could take the phone to a "4G Experience store" and they could reprogram the phone to get what I wanted, but (a) there is no such store within 500 miles of me and (b) what would they do, change the phone number just like they can do online?

I love the EVO, I'm completely satisfied with the plans and rate structure, but at times like this I feel like selling these 3 EVOs on eBay (2 are still in unopened boxes), cancel my credit card, go underground and tell Sprint to go to ----.

EDIT: just to be clear, this is all because my online order went in as 3 new lines of service rather than 3 upgrades. How that happened, I have no clue. Interestingly, Sprint insists over and over that the maximum number of lines you can have on one account is 5, but clearly I have 6.

The EVO's are designed to only work with the "Everything" plans offered by Sprint. its right in the fine print. If you're trying to get an EVO to work on an older plan, they have every right to refuse the service to you.

And once you switch off on older plan you can't return to it---even it is only a day or so later and you returned the hardware.

glad you got it ironed out, sounds like you ran into some lazy employees, that combined with the fact that they have dealt almost non stop with EVO related issues, not saying this is an excuse but I imagine this didnt help.
