I love my Evo but oh my God does Sprint Navigation suck.

Come on Gordon! The Lexus satnav is worse than a $9.99 Chinese GPS unit! Mercedes has got it down these days.

the Germans suck at NAV - and all electronics IMO. at least the ones i've seen. my friends have Mercedes, BMW, Audi NAVs. no touchscreen? check. jog dial wheel? check. clumsy non-intuitive interface? check. poor GUI? check. Conclusion? ALL GARBAGE.

Their electronics may not be up to your par but I know for certain Germany isn't known anything but their outstanding engineering of cars.

But my sound system is perfect on my BMW... touchscreen isn't too big in cars cause of overheating on summer days with the Windows up. But when that ac comes on... its instant and gets cold enough that sometimes it fogs up inside

Second that, I'm a automotive service tech and absolutely hate working on VW's. Their electronics suck.

Sprint Nav on the Evo is alot slower then it was on the Pre. Since I came from the Pre that is what I was used to. The whole loggin in and re-routing on the Evo is sub par. Sometimes it's quick but more then not it's slow. In a residentual area I will pass 2-3 streets before it can calculate the re-route...and if i turned on a street before it has finished it will start to give me what it calculated but see i'm not along that route...so another reroute.

I do like the google Nav...but i HATE the voice. It also takes the most scenic routes i've ever seen. I love the speaking my requests and over all has alot of tools that make it awesome.

also just a side grip. My Pre was able to do more at the same time then it seems my Evo can. And base on the hardware that should not be so. The only culprit I can think of is the OS it's self or atleast the frontend. I used my girlfriends Driod Eris and good lord is it slow to respond to the touch ( as the Evo is sometimes ). I think it's an Andriod thing.

I had a Pre, which only had Sprint Nav, which I never liked because:

1. It talked too much, at times when I really felt it wasn't necessary.
2. It would tell you to turn about a third of a mile in advance.
3. It seemed to get lost a lot.

When I got the EVO I naturally started with Sprint Nav, but since I actually use GPS a lot I decided to try Google Nav.

My conclusion is that GN is better than SN. If Google just improves the voice, and release a maps download feature so you don't have to rely on a internet connection-that would be awesome.

Ok, I am going to take back what I said earlier about Sprint navigation. On the evo it takes forever to open claiming its "logging in" which it never did on my instinct. If it takes this long to open I am going to have to use Google maps because in my Job I don't have 2 minutes to waste waiting on a program to open.

I don't know how you feel about task killers, but me personally I use ATK, to kill apps lm not using prior to launching SN... and it makes a big difference in the start up time of SN...

I do run ATK. I think it has something todo with the version of telenav on the phone. I'm switching to Google maps since it boots up so much faster.

Sprint Nav never worked well on my Pre. So for it's a bit better on my EVO, however a gps on a cell phone is no subtitute for a real gps.

I respectively disagree. I have a Garmin to sell to you since it is dead to me now.

Where was the EVO ten years ago so I didn't have to blow money on Garmins, camcorders, webcams, digicams, Axims, mp3 players, etc.

Most incredible battery operated device I have held in my hand. Except for that torpedo shaped device that made that one girl shake all night long. I might have to look her up to try the EVO out.

I travel for work alot and have used my Sprint Nav and google nav. Personally I have never had a problem and have been able to find some obscure parks and things in my home town i didnt know how to get to. In California it updated me on traffic updates and provided me with a great alternate route that helped me make my flight. I no longer pay extra for a rental with nav or seperate nav system and i leave my garmin at home which is nice for travel in general.

With that said i perfer the Sprint Nav only because the voice is much easier to listen to compared to the google voice. All in all either app is great for me and i get use out of it at least onnce a week.

I'm not a troll. Sprint sucks from my experience, if you go west in Salt Lake City (my area) and in Henderson, Nevada (suburb of vegas,my dads city) Sprint's 3G/cell reception is non-Existent while ATT/VZW have near full bars..

Wow. Make a judgment about Sprint's entire network based on two areas. That's a powerful analysis.

I support a major government client in a suburb of Washington, DC. (which is a little bigger than Vegas). Around their location Verizon sucks. Inside the building, I can't even get a connection for my Verizon wireless modem. But I get full bars on Sprint, and iPhone users report a great signal with AT&T. So I guess I should conclude that Verizon's network sucks?

I despair for America's education system.

I will still use my Garmin for some trips since it has all the maps in it and doesn't need a data connection to keep showing them. I drove to my parent's house in the mountains east of San Diego last weekend and used the Sprint Nav and once it lost a signal, the map went away when it needed the next section. Then the phone roamed over to Verizon and took a while to get the map back but I had to be sitting still. Interestingly the phone did show 3G while roaming on Verizon when I was at their house. I was able to download and run Google Earth from there all while roaming. Better than my last phone but still not a total replacement for my Garmin. And yes, I did try Google Nav and it had the same problem once I got in the dead zone.

NicksGarage,

My Garmin is three years old, some areas need a new map. It keeps asking for me to update the maps which, of course, requires another ~ 70 dollars. I didn't anticipate that when I originally purchased the device. Am I missing something? If not, I can sit still to let my EVO get the map.

I loved Sprint Nav on my Instinct and on my Pre, worked flawlessly, but I have noticed it seems to have quite a few problems on the Evo. I had to use it for the first time the other day and it put me right in the middle of traffic, when I tried to detour and take a way around it all it wanted to do was get me back to the same place. I don't know why, but it seems as if the traffic function is faulty on the Evo. I guess I'll have to try Google Nav next time.

Mine is about that old as well and I haven't updated the maps in a couple years. It still works for most places I go since I need to rely on it in rural areas. I'm not saying that any solution is perfect but I like to have my options.

BTW, another function that my Garmin has that neither EVO solution does is that it tells me the speed limits where I'm at. In some states, they don't seem to put a lot of speed limit signs up and I don't like getting tickets. I also use the Garmin as a speedometer and trip meter in my old classic cars that I take on long road trips.
