HELP !!! I intended to change my gmail account name on my Thunderbolt and thought it was easy. I really made a mess. I created a new gmail account with the name that I wanted to use. After I checked it to see if the gmail worked, I deleted the old account, the one that I originally set up when I turned up this phone for the first time. Now, the phone keeps telling me that there is a sign-in error for the old [deleted] gmail account and the account still appears as a Google account in "Accounts &sync" in Settings. Anyone out there that can help me, I would be forever in your debt. I'm too old for this stuff. .

menu, settings, accounts and sync, select your old account. Now at thebottom of the screen it says remove account. do it.

Now navigate to menu, settings, accounts and sync. Press add account at the bottom of this screen and select Google.

Your contacts weren't stored on your old gmail account were they?

I would do a Factory Reset (Menu>Settings>SD & Phone Storage>Factory Data Reset) and sign in with the new account.

Make sure you back up your applications and anything else you need before doing this.

Let's hope not. Unless you backed them up to your computer recently, they're gone now.

You cannot delete the Gmail account used to register the phone. Rooted or not... you need to do a data wipe and register the new account during the setup process. Use MyBackup Pro if you're not rooted or you can always use Titanium Backup or Mybackup if you are rooted.
