I really want this phone but

Except that the US isn't getting early batches. Don't forget that the One has been on the market for over a month elsewhere. Unfortunately, HTC doesn't seem to be able to fix the quality issues. The earlier European models have the exact same problems. I have one that's more or less problem free (also have a slightly crooked volume rocker, but not bad enough to return it) but I've been reading tons of messages on all kinds of forums about quality issues.

You're exactly right. These same quality issues go at least as far back as the thunderbolt.

it absolutely tickles me that with all this "quality build", shiny aluminum advantage over sg4 banter coming from htc one proponents- the first thing you guys do is rush out looking for a case to cover up your amazing art pieces..

To an extent but they always seem very adamant about charging you and setting it up first without letting you see it. And what I consider a defect may not be one to whomever is helping me. The chick kept trying to get me to add a line to buy it too when all I wanted was to buy off contract. Kinda got old.

It seems an easy thing to express your concern to the sales person, maybe even showing the defects in the display models. Then insist on examining the unit they want to sell you before you sign anything. Unless they are crazy stupid, or they really have something to hide, they should be happy to set you at ease.

I'm pretty OCD when it comes to my phones. When I got my black iPhone 5, I had the sales rep go through 3 different boxes before we found one that didn't have the little scuffs straight from the factory. Not just HTC, all manufacturers have little issues like this. They are mass-produced gadgets, there will always be some minute variations from "perfect" but you can always make the sales rep let you inspect the phone before you give them any money.

yes but we're talking about here are not "minute"

These QC issues are the only thing preventing me from being sold on this (otherwise) awesome device! However, I bought a Nexus 7 even though I knew about its issues and I still loved that, at least until I cracked the screen.

I hope these issues are just because HTC is rushing the production.

When you have three display models in your store that all have very real hardware defects, you lose credibility to the person looking to purchase the phone.
3 defective phones out of 3 phones on display = 100% of devices I've come into contact with that are defective.

Pretty sure the three they opened were selected out of a box full of HTC ones. If the first three pulled were defective, what gives me confidence that the next one they pull for me will be ok? Or the next? or the next?

Again, I've own pretty much every major android phone on every carrier since the G1 and out of everything, the most problematic experiences I've ever had have all been with HTC phones.

Every HTC phone I've had, has had Defects:

HTC Thunderbolt: Had to return twice. Received my third, still defective and ended up selling it to someone who was ok with the defect.
HTC Droid Incredible: First one received had defect, second one was ok and rocked that phone for awhile.
HTC Rezound: First one received, defective, went to get it exchanged in store and the one they pulled out for me was defective so I ended up going with a phone from a different manufacturer.
HTC One X: First one defective, second one defective, returned and went with an iPhone.

I don't have the time nor patience to go through this again with HTC and seeing as how the displays were bad, I decided to walk out the store proud with my old iPhone 5 that's in stellar condition.

Now I'm holding out for the S4. I'm hoping it makes a decent impression in store or I'll probably pick up the Note 2 again.

Fair enough. You have had several bad experiences with HTC. It is understandable that you will not want to buy their phones again.

I am actually surprised you kept going back that many times.

Battered wife. Maybe get a 2nd run of the One.

I want to love them and the One is the best looking android I've seen so I was very excited. I'm a techy so I want the latest and greatest and there are things about HTC phones that do set them apart. As far as skinned android, I'm liking where sense is going and feel it's more pleasing to the eye compared to touchwiz.

Knowing my purchasing habits and my need for something new, I'll probably end up getting the One at some point. I just hope I come out alive.

I am pretty sure there are cases of every phone where someone has had bad luck with them not just HTC, I own 2 flawless HTC phones never any issues but you failed to state defective in what way cosmetic or function

In.

I'm sensing a pattern here.

I think I may not be as picky as some of you or just lucky. I have had several phones going back to my Nexus One in 2010 and never noticed any exterior defects. I was watching a video of one of my favorite tech reviewers on YouTube. She was pointing out several flaws in the HTC one build and had to hold the phone very close to the camera so that you could see it.

I thought to myself that I probably would not have even noticed it unless I was really really looking for it. This reminds me of the iPhone 4 antenna issue were reviewer's were squeezing the crap out of the phone trying to make it loose reception lol!

All joking aside, if you really find defects in your phone you should take it back, it's your money.
I hope when I receive my HTC One that there aren't any defects and if they are, they are so tiny that it doesn't bother me.

Sounds like you were "adamant" about letting the rep process the sale without asking to inspect the device first. You have the right as a consumer to inspect merchandise before purchase. I've never purchased a device without having the rep take it out of the box and hand it to me. I'm paying the commission. And if he/she acts annoyed there are other reps who would gladly take care of me. Managers also.
Your case is an example of someone not being in control of his buying process. You're too worried about hurting a rep's feelings.
I purchased an HTC one a couple days ago. You can bet I gave it a good inspection before I purchased it. Even after the rep rolled her eyes.
Honestly, you just sound like you're two parts OCD and mobile phone addicted, if I'm to believe you've had every major Android phone on every carrier. Just the thought of that is exhausting. If I'm to believe that, then it speaks to an addiction. You gotta have the latest, greatest fresh off the presses.
You got all that energy to constantly purchase phones but no energy to inspect them before purchase?

So it sounds like you base your buying decisions based on the "impression" you get from the floor models. Really??
You do know the floor models get used and abused right? All manner of disregarding hands rough those display models up all day every day.
A basic understanding of that might make things less stressful for you.
