I really want this phone but

When you have three display models in your store that all have very real hardware defects, you lose credibility to the person looking to purchase the phone.
3 defective phones out of 3 phones on display = 100% of devices I've come into contact with that are defective.

Pretty sure the three they opened were selected out of a box full of HTC ones. If the first three pulled were defective, what gives me confidence that the next one they pull for me will be ok? Or the next? or the next?

Again, I've own pretty much every major android phone on every carrier since the G1 and out of everything, the most problematic experiences I've ever had have all been with HTC phones.

Every HTC phone I've had, has had Defects:

HTC Thunderbolt: Had to return twice. Received my third, still defective and ended up selling it to someone who was ok with the defect.
HTC Droid Incredible: First one received had defect, second one was ok and rocked that phone for awhile.
HTC Rezound: First one received, defective, went to get it exchanged in store and the one they pulled out for me was defective so I ended up going with a phone from a different manufacturer.
HTC One X: First one defective, second one defective, returned and went with an iPhone.

I don't have the time nor patience to go through this again with HTC and seeing as how the displays were bad, I decided to walk out the store proud with my old iPhone 5 that's in stellar condition.

Now I'm holding out for the S4. I'm hoping it makes a decent impression in store or I'll probably pick up the Note 2 again.

And every Samsung phone I've seen has had something one can call a "defect."

It's all in the eye of the beholder.

So it sounds like you base your buying decisions based on the "impression" you get from the floor models. Really??
You do know the floor models get used and abused right? All manner of disregarding hands rough those display models up all day every day.
A basic understanding of that might make things less stressful for you.

I went the second morning of release...how badly bruised could they be from being on the floor for 2 days? Even if they were out for a week, your statement has absolutely nothing to do with the type of defects that I mentioned in my original post. Defects that other users are seeing straight out of the box, not something cause by store lurker hands messing with the units.

Also, per my post that you quoted, I base my purchasing judgement off of past experiences. The experiences I've had with HTC in the past were poor. Seeing these display units greatly reminded me of how poor.

Say you were to buy a car you thought looked sexy but after a few years of owning it, it's cause nothing but problems for you. You'll most likely get a bad taste in your mouth. Future car purchases would most likely involve the thought "Once bitten, twice shy" when considering the same manufacturer.

How does one reconcile your signature with your supposed history?

I did. One user, different phones. Only constant is the user.

As much as I want to agree with you, because I do truly love my Droid DNA and the build quality of HTC devices, the user is not the only constant, the manufacturer would be a constant as well as they were all HTC devices, albeit different phones. I agree that had I received a subpar device for a premium cost, I too would be wary of purchasing another device from that manufacturer. But with that being said, I have never received a faulty HTC handset. And had I, I would continue to return until I got a device worthy of the price I paid for it. Quality control in these factories that are spitting out these phones is not what it should be. But I have seen this in many devices, not just in the One.

But they're not constant, regardless of if it's the same manufacturer. Every single one of those phones would have been built on a different production line, with different from workers, and in different factories. There is no constant between them.

I agree. However, considering Apple, Samsung, and every other manufacturer out there has some tolerance for latent issues, I find these types of "I pulled 8 devices and 8 could not meet my threshold of quality" to be nothing more than baiting pieces. Nothing more, nothing less.

You poor soul! If I had as much bad luck with HTC phones, I sure wouldn't be frequenting their forums!

The one is the best design for 2013. but it's difficult to control the quality as before. sometimes looks like the iphone 5

I've seen the good in both the S4 and One but what really shift my mindset is the bad. The One seems to have a lot of people complaining about defects in the build (their build was the selling factor). I will have to wait and see what defects the S4 has to make my final decision. This has been a tough month of review watching and analyzing. I'm exhausted.

I always buy from the carrier never a retail store due to there are too many things that can happen to the hardware to get damage it seems when it comes to phones.

Nice try.

Looks like I'm getting the phone. Even though I canceled my 32GB unlocked order, it shipped out tonight and will be here tomorrow. I'll play with it and if it's defective, it's going right back.

I'm happy to report that I decided to get one and it's amazing and flawless. This is my second one. The first one had dead pixels but the second go is amazing and I'm excited. This is an excellent phone.

EDIT: And I lied. As soon as I got in a darker room and had a black screen on the phone, I found 10 dead pixels. They were faint but very noticeable when in a darker room. Rushed back to AT&T and had them check it in the back room and they confirmed. The girl said she's heard a few complaints from customers about dead pixels on this phone. I was going to try for one more but they were sold out so I got a refund. :(
