I rooted my evo lte and....

I agreed with you. I mean if it already fast why root ? ain't like you can get 24 hours with heavy use or change the fonts color of everything.

Hey, to each his /her own. People should do what ever they want. I can only speak for myself. Still I was told because I don't root I'm "not even using HALF of the phone's potential". Still waiting to hear about that amount of things I can't do. All I heard was 3 things that I don't want to do and I have not heard something someone uses their phone for that I can not do.

See post 7 in this thread. Those things may mean little to you but they add so much for me. Especially having no ads in apps and browser. To me, that alone is worth the roughly 5 minutes it takes to root. Web pages load so much faster without having to load banner ads. And frankly, I just don't want to see them, especially taking up valuable space on a small screen (did I just call this screen small LOL). I also don't have to worry about my kids opening an ad for anything in a game that they're playing or the ad taking up space in an app.

Also, I take it you've never dropped or lost your phone. My screen cracked on my OG evo after a fall. Once I got the replacement phone, the Nandroid backup had my new phone EXACTLY the way I had my original in a matter of seconds. I would have wasted hours changing all of my settings for all of my apps that slowly occur over the life of owning a smartphone. Rooting is not for everyone, but it's super easy to do and literally takes about 5 minutes. If it's not for you, I'm happy for you that the phone that Sprint and HTC sold you is exactly how you want it. For me, I wanted something more. I wanted something better then what Sprint/HTC came up with and the dev community allows me to do just that.

Well said. And I agree, backups are a big reason for rooting in my opinion...nandroids and individual app backups using Titanium. Hiding ads is also a plus. To me, one of the main reasons for using an open source platform is so you don't have to stay locked to the experience that the manufacturer wants you to have, but can instead have the experience that you want to have. I feel like as far a rooting is concerned, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain (unless you have a hard time following instructions :)) A lot of the issues I see people complaining about have been fixed in custom ROMs, so why wait for HTC to roll out an update at their leisure when you can get the same functionality earlier along with a slew of other features as well?

Are you running 1.22.651.3 with s-off? I have the new OTA, but I am rooted but I can't achieve s-off to get the rom I want :(

You shouldn't need S-Off to use a ROM. If you unlocked the bootloader with HTC Dev Unlock, you can flash whatever rom you want through a custom recovery.

Well, I was fully rooted with s-off prior to the OTA. I forgot to clear out my app cache for Wallet prior to rooting, so I decided to RUU back to stock to try to recover Wallet/NFC. Once back to stock, the OTA came out and I decided to go for it. Now I'm on 1.22.651.3 with s-off but no way to root! Would love to root again and load TWPR back up, but the only way to solve the problems I am having with my E4GLTE is to load a ROM without Sense. Multitasking is completely broken when Sense is running and hogging up all the available RAM! This is a major design flaw on HTC's part and the only solution is to load a ROM without Sense. It doesn't seem like there are any Sense-less ROMs at this time that are fully functional, so nothing else is really appealing to me. I would like to root so that I can do a full backup, but it doesn't seem like there are any root options for me since I took the OTA.

Can you do the 1.13 RUU and then run regawMOD to get root back? Or are you not allowed to downgrade once you've taken the OTA?

having never used foxfire, how hard is it to set up the wifi tethering once you install it? Is it something I do through foxfire or do I just use the stock tethering?

Foxfi is super easy to setup on the EVO LTE, just make sure to change the SSID and passcode for the network created by foxfi.

If ur unrooted, you can not use the stock tethering without a plan from sprint. That's the reason for foxfi.

Thing 1: ALWAYS clear Google Wallet before flashing ANYTHING. You can always set it up again, and you won't brick the secure part of NFC if you reset Wallet.

Thing 2: I rooted and HTC-unlocked before the 1.22.651.3 OTA came out. Then I flashed some ROM's that were based on 1.22.651.3 (ViperROM, MeanROM, and CleanROM, if I remember right). I think I had to flash newer radios somewhere along the way, too. Then I decided I wanted S-off to test the CM 10 build. Looking at the thread on XDA, I discovered that I needed to go back to the pre-OTA 1.13.651.1. They suggest flashing Fresh LTE 5.1.1 by flipz, which hasn't been updated to the newer HTC software. I did that, but I'm waiting to unlock a la LazyPanda (S-off) till I get my new computer. This one is slow and very short on storage space.

Thing 3: The advantage of S-off, I believe, is that you can change the version of Android. Some ROM's are 4.0.4 or, like CM 10, 4.1.1, while a stock or HTC-unlocked EVO is stuck on 4.0.3.

Thing 4: Of the 4 ROM's I've tried, I actually like Fresh the best. CleanROM is really fast and has a lot of "bloatware" removed, but that includes HTC's Mail app (I couldn't get the Email app to work with MS Exchange), the Twitter integration in the People app and other core apps, and Swype. Yes, the dev removed Swype! No idea why. ViperROM and MeanROM seemed choppy, laggy, and slow to me. Since I liked the AOSP-based Apex Launcher that came with CleanROM (DE, I might add), I've installed it on top of Fresh. I should add, though, that I've been having issues with my EVO dropping the Wifi signal. I think it started with CleanROM and continued with Fresh. Hopefully CM (9 or 10) or an updated Fresh will fix this.

Thanks for reading my novel, and I hope this helps.

Reasons why I've rooted:

-Ad Block. No ads in browser or apps.
-Free Wifi tethering
-Mod to turn off camera shutter sound
-Mod to get rid of big ugly 3 dot menu bar in all non ICS coded apps and reclaim the full size of this beautiful screen. Remap Menu button to recent apps and long press home for recent apps
-Mod to use NFC tags from lockscreen. No need to turn on phone, unlock and then have use of NFC
-Remove pre installed bloatware apps that I'll never use.
-Nandroid backups/Titanium backup. If my phone is ever lost or breaks, I can instantly recover using a backup and the replacement phone will instantly be exactly how my old phone was
-Custom ROMs. I've always been a fan of stock ROMs on previous phones so this was never a huge one to me before. With the HUGE failure of multitasking on this phone, I've never been more eager to get rid of Sense. Getting CM9 or CM10 will be like getting a brand new model phone.

These might not be for everyone, but that's what is so appealing about Android. Everyone can customize their experience as they see fit, or simply choose not to do anything different.
Sounds good.... is this possible with the new update 1.22.651.3 if so.....i have not seen any updated methods on how to root. can anyone please post something as of 8/15/2012? there are no links to drivers needed and the real zip file needed. so many posts but nothing solid. if there is i wouldn't know which one is ligit. ty:(

You'll probably want to use regawMOD:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1690919

The OP has the program and instructions, but you'll probably want to read page 80 or so for information about the new version. There is an additional step required to manually flash a file. The dev is working on a fix for it though so if you're not in a hurry then he'll probably have it back to one-click pretty soon.

Swype. Yes, the dev removed Swype! No idea why.

All you had to do was ask, I could give you swype back.
Also a better version of Swype is almost always available for free at beta.swype.com

So is there a Sense based ROM that fixes multitasking? I wouldnt have purchased an HTC phone if I didnt want Sense.

I tried that, but for some reason I couldn't get it to work. It may have been a "user error," but there it is. And that still doesn't fix the MS Exchange issue (I'm forced to use it--I'd much rather use Gmail if it was up to me) or some of HTC's nice touches. When I get better at coding, I want to make my own ROM that combines the best of Sense (features, mainly) with the best of AOSP (fluidity and consistency, plus the latest and greatest from Mountain View). It would also give users options to pick and choose Sense or AOSP features. But that will have to wait till the right time. For now, I haven't yet found the time to make my new laptop and my phone to play nice with each other, so I'm stuck on Fresh 5.1.1 despite its Wifi dropping issue, home screen redraws, and non-Jelly Bean-ness. However, a JB ROM is where I'm headed as soon as I'm S-off.

And yes, I would have bemoaned the lack of Swype on XDA, but I'm not as active there as I am here, so I haven't yet posted the requisite 10 times so I can comment on dev threads. And I didn't think to look for your ROM thread here on AC. Despite my technophiliac mentality, this is my first smartphone (mostly because of cost), so I'm still kinda new to this stuff. If you'll allow me to go off on a tangent, it started when I saw my sister's Nexus S 4G and the OG EVO my brother-in-law used at the time (he's since upgraded to an LTE). I thought they were cooler than iPhones, and the rest, as they say, is history.
