I rooted! ... Now what?

So, I rooted my phone with that Revolutionary method, but now I'm not sure what I should do now. I don't know how to install ROMs and kernels (or what they even are), I don't know how to remove "bloatware", etc. I'd like to give CM7 a go, as it seems fairly popular, but I don't know how to actually install it, or anything like that. Does installing CM7 wipe my apps/ data? Or do they all just show up in it, just fine?

Also, I've heard rooting can help extend battery life. What, exactly, has to be installed/ set up/ etc. in order to help the battery life last longer than it would on stock, non-rooted?

Lastly, I asked this in another topic, but no one responded; is there any app or anything that can make headphones with controls designed for the iPhone (+, -, and middle buttons) work on this phone? I know it can't really be done when stock, due to that being an Apple proprietary thing, or whatever, but is there any way to get it working when rooted?

Thanks for any tips and guidance. Still very inexperienced with this whole "rooting" thing, and I feel almost overwhelmed by everything that's out there, so I don't even know where to start. @_@

Ask yourself, "why did I root"? Then, start there.

Heh, well, I rooted to get rid of bloatware, hopefully improve battery life, and try out CM7 (and possibly some other ROMs). I just don't know how to do any of that, and I want to make sure I don't mess up my phone at all, now that it's rooted.

Take a look at the stickied posts in the Tbolt rooting subforum. Cyber Warrior's post on flashing ROMs provides an excellent explanation of the backup and flashing process.

most of the time when you flash a new rom the bloatware will already have been removed.. just a heads up. so no need to really go through freezing and removing the bloat if you plan on just flashing a new one... just a heads up.

Okay, I installed CM7, and a kernel for it. Question, though, why is the Android market not on there? Can I sideload the Market (if so, where can I get the APK?), or will it cause problems, since I'm not on stock?

The great thing about flashing a custom ROM is you don't have to see ANY bloatware!!!

Please look and read the Stick thread on How to Install, Backup, etc by Cory... you need to read at least the first 3 or 4 posts... I've linked to it in my signature below... along with a link to the latest Radio's.

CM7 does NOT load the Google app, which the Market is part of that... read the first post on any CM7 ROM post and you will see a link to GAPPS... which is the Google APPS file that you need to flash to the Market apps and other Google Apps. Download and flash that file.

Okay, question that doesn't necessarily pertain to rooting... I reinstalled Widget Locker, but I can't get my phone to wake by pressing the volume keys, anymore. This always worked fine before I rooted, but I can't figure out why it's not working now.

Also, anyone know about the question I asked earlier, about headphones with controls that were made for iPhones? If there was a way I could get that working, I'd be SO happy, heh...

CM7 doesn't wake with the volume keys. There may be a setting or mod for doing that but never looked since I prefer the default.

Ah, well, playing around with the CM7 settings, I did find something that got that working, so that's good. One other thing I'm having trouble with is, I can't get any clock widgets (the ones that make clocks that look like the Sense one) to pick up my location for weather. Any tips on that?

Also still wondering about the iPhone headphones.

Edit: Oh, and it appears I don't have a Voicemail app anymore... Is that something I have to flash for, as well?

I'm currently not running CM7... but look around under their own settings, I think it's under the regular settings... I'm fairly sure it's under there. I'm using Liquid Smooth and they have their own settings app and it's under the Behavior section... called Volume Wake... personally I don't like Volume Wake, but it's there on Liquid Smooth... and I thought it was on CM7.

If you have so many questions about your phone and obviously you are new to this, it would have been very wise to read, read and read more until you felt comfortable. I spent a solid week just reading different articles before I rooted my first Android phone, Nexus One. Do not rush into flashing any custom roms until you get familiar with everything. The most important thing is always make a back-up before you flash anything.

Yeah, I know, I did go over the rooting instructions a lot before I did it, but like I said, now that I've crossed that threshold, it just seems like there's an overwhelming amount of information out there. I was just looking for some guidance to sift through it all. :)

I do have some new questions, though. I'm liking CM7, but I really wish there was a way I could go back and somehow retrieve my save data from the games I have installed. First of all, is it even possible to retrieve save data? Is it just, like, a data file stored somewhere that I can copy over, and get my saved data back? If so, where do I find this file? What is it called? Does it differ depending on the game?

If this is possible, then my next question is, when I made a backup before flashing to CM7, I just did it in "recovery mode" (the screen where you have to use the volume rocker to move your selection up and down, and the power button to confirm). Can I just make a backup of my current CM7 setup, then restore to my previous backup, copy my game saves somewhere, restore back to my CM7 setup, and insert my game saves?

Yes you can... when you are ready, press and hold the power button, then select Reboot, then select Recovery... make a backup of your current CM7 installed ROM... then after it has made a backup, then restore your older backup, then boot up... I prefer an called "MyBackup Root"... download the app... it's fairly simple and straight forward... just select Backup > Applications & Media > Local (this will save it on your SD card) > expand the Apps selection > choose the apps you want to backup the data for > OK.

Then boot into Recovery, Restore CM7 backup, reboot... download "MyBackup Root" again... start backup app > Restore > Applications & Media > Local > select the backup file date > expand the Apps select > select all the apps > OK... after it's done restoring your backup data it will tell you to reboot... do it... then when you come back up you will have your data back for those apps.

I do this for several games and a couple apps just before I install a new ROM... only after loosing my data on Angry Birds for the 4th or 5th time and having all 3 stars on all levels.

Ah, okay, thanks. Do I have to wipe my data/ caches before restoring? Or can I just restore, and it'll work fine?

Just restore and you are fine. It backs up the data, so on the restore it will restore everything perfectly.
