Ok, after all the moaning and graoning I've been doing after taking the OTA, I just got the bright idea to start in to H-boot and check my "S" status and it is still off! :D I tried to just download and install rom manager but no dice; says I need to be rooted. what can I do? I know there's something....

HELP!!!

You must have flashed unrevoked forever prior to accepting the OTA.

You need too flash a custom recovery through the hboot menu or fastboot flash one with adb. Then flash super user to root the current stock rom or simply flash a custom rom.

when i launched into hboot i went to recovery but got the red triangle, so I just pulled the battery and restarted. I didn't root it previously i got it from a friend who had so I'm not sure on the forever part. However What I'm getting from this is that I should download a rom and rename it pcimgsomething.zip and put it on the root of the sd card and then launch into hboot?

just want to make sure I get it right; if you have the time could you shoot me a quick step guide. just the basics, i haven't flashed since the OTA and am a little rusty but remember almost everything except what to rename the file and where to put it.

assumiong this might go well, I can flash the custom ROM then flash superuser? I also tried to install SU today and it was a no go as well...

I think I mis understood, so how do I flash a custom recover from hboot is the question I have, sorry for the previous gibbrish.

You need to get a flashable zip of the recovery and rename it PC36IMG.

If you flash a custom rom you don't have to flash the superuser as it will is already on the rom. igotsanevo4g was saying flash it if you keep the stock rom.

You're gonna want to use amon ra or twrp recovery. No it doesn't let you auto flash using rom manager, but manually flashing is better for beginners, besides the headaches rom manager can cause.

So go to the twrp or amon ra thread on XDA, download the PC36IMG and put it on the root of your SD card. From there reboot into hboot and it will automatically check for a pc36img and prompt you to update. Hit volume up for yes, and .... Viola custom recovery.

Right now I'm digging twrp. I used Amon_RA for a very long time and had no issues with it.

There is a thread here for twrp and if you want Amon's here is a link for you. It will download as PC36IMG. Remember to delete it after you have it installed.

im having a problem, I do have s-off. there is a file on the sd card called soff that speaks to unrevoked forever, so I'm sure that is good to go. however i keep on getting "wrong image" when it tries to load the PC36IMG.zip. it does that if i load the recovery image after extracting it from the downloaded file you sent in your last post. if I just rename the downloaded file as is and put it on the sd card it doesn't even recognize that it is there. i did have rom manager when my phone was rooted before, so do I need to flash that instead?

Glad you got it to work! I'll have to check on my dropbox link. Sorry it didn't work, something might have happen as another user had success with it.

Sorry I couldn't get back to you faster. It was time for my daughter's gymnastic class.

Edit: Just fully read your post. You wasn't suppose to extract the zip I had for you. That would be the problem, but anyways you got a custom recovery and that is all that matters.

maybe i spoke too quickly I am having a hard time flashing SU. it just aborts and says it's a bad file. so I am doing a nandroid now and am going to flash a previous nandroid, that should install SU right? and will it still be installed if i flash this stock nandroid I just made?

so I flashed my original vaelpak rc2, and all is well I am now going to clear data and dalvik and cache and flash the 2.3.3 and see if I can then flash SU. does that sound right?

which version of the rooted 2.3.3 is most like the OTA odexed or de-odexed? what's the difference?

Both are the ota but just how the files are. Some say the odexed has a faster boot time and de-odexed is easier for those that want to theme.
