Wait, a low cost and highly secure/stable alternative to compromising the engineering decisions and/or cost factors of a device yet still having the freedom to store as much stuff as you want to between internal, external and cloud storage solutions? Hmm... what's the catch?

Besides Google hoping (forcing?) that people will use their cloud services, it makes no sense to not offer higher options. Obviously it'll cost more, so charge more. Give people the options. If there's a 16GB or 32GB option, then there should be a 64GB option, or even more. It's just that simple.

This day and age, with the size of apps, with how many apps we want, with the way we share pictures with others, with size of higher quality movies, with wanting music on the go, and entertainment on the go in the general, I'm finding even 32GB (Nexus 5) is not sufficient. The other day, I got this:



And that sucked.

I agree but 33gb is fine ,I'm on a 64MB phone now not switching because it's too fun having that space BUT 32 isn't shabby

What do you fill phone up with? I have a bout 5GB of music, less than 500MB of pics and about a GB of apps. I only put what I actually use on my phone. If I don't use it, I get rid of it. I see like this, I'm gone anywhere from 8-12 hours a day, sometimes more. The amount of data I have, whether it's apps, games, or music, is enough to get me through that day. And no, I don't shuffle my apps and music around. I never do actually. While I can see why everyone would want to cram everything into their phone, it's all about managing that data. Plus, your phone isn't a desktop replacement either.

I'm trying to figure out why everyone thinks cloud storage is a good thing. Yes I use G+ to backup pics, and I've used Dropbox on occasion, but I'm beginning to think it's really not secure or smart. I also back everything up to my computer and I'm thinking of completely getting rid of cloud storage for security.

Which is another reason I'd prefer much larger storage options.

This may come as a bit of a shock, so brace yourself Not everybody buys these things to be portable entertainment centers. For some of us: The primary role of these devices is communications: Phone, messaging, email, perhaps web, etc. I never play games on mine. I've got some music on it, just because I can, but I never play it. I move photos off as soon as possible. I've got a 32GB SD card in my "G". I doubt I'll ever use but a mere fraction of it.

I'm on a 32GB phone now and literally only use about 5-6GB. If I had my music on it, it would be a different story. That or games like Bard's Tale. Only games on my phone now are family guy and geometry dash.

Me too. Does everyone but me have unlimited data? I've got 1gb and I could burn thru that with music really fast and movies in a blink. Wifi? Can't think of a single place with wifi other than home that I'd want or be able to watch a movie and at home I'd be watching on something a lot bigger than a phone.

I generally have to download podcasts before leaving the house, in order to be sure of having something to listen to while I'm out and about; there are usually too many dead spots in the neighborhood to allow radio streaming. I live in a small city now, but it was the same when I lived in West Los Angeles.

What planet are they talking about in the OEM and carrier commercials, where they show people watching live sports or feature films, just on the mobile data network? It's sure not the one I'm living on...

It's not just a matter of wanting to use a phone as portable entertainment, though that is definitely a factor. As smartphones continue to evolve, we want to do more and more with them. The extent to which we can surf the web, check the bank balance, pay bills, book a trip, by just whipping out a smartphone rather than powering up the laptop, becomes a major factor our satisfaction with the device. The more we want to do, the more apps we tend to download, and the more music, data, and pictures we have on there. Music? Most of my CDs won't play anymore without skipping or stuttering. But if I can manage to rip them on my laptop, then I can convert than to MP3s which I can play, either through the ear buds, or with a patch cable through my stereo.

In effect, the phone becomes an "activity center" at which we play and work, taking over much of that role from PCs and, dare I say, even Apple computers.

If it weren't for music I could probably live with 16GB pretty easily. I back all my photos up to the cloud which is fine, the files aren't so large that it affects my data plan. Music is another story though. Smartphones have become entertainment hubs. When I run, commute, or do whatever I want to listen to music. If I use a fitness app and stream music everyday my data limit is done in no time. I have "unlimited" data (5GB of LTE, then switches to Edge on AT&T). 5GB is really easy to blow through I've found. My work doesn't have Wifi, nor can I use it when I commute. T-Mobile is on the right path letting users have certain music apps not count against data. If T-Mobile didn't suck where I lived I'd be perfectly happy with 16, but as is I need 16-32GB on board with micro sd for music, or a 64GB at the very least without micro sd.

If the carriers wouldn't gouge US customers with their data prices I don't think we would necessarily need phones with high storage.

my nexus 4 8gb became insufficient after about a year.. I started having no room for anything. By the end of its 2nd year, I had almost no apps on it. Glad I upgraded to 32gb moto x.

I take quite a bit of video with two kids in multiple sports/activities. A single 4 minute at-bat can chew up 250MB on HD, so I need as much storage as possible. On my current device, it's 16GB on board with a 32GB card. I have 8GB available on board and 7GB on the card, so it's a total of 48GB storage with 33GB used. A 16GB phone with only about 10GB usable is way too small for me.

I think everyone here have some really good arguments. I completely discounted cloud storage, but you know what? I use G+ to auto backup my pics. I hadn't really considered it seriously, but I could easily delete pics and probably lots of apps I don't use.

So I'll give you that, cloud storage and keeping the apps under control would go a long way towards cutting down on storage needed.

But considering OS size and growing app size (they are growing on mobile just as they are on computers) I would say that at the very least all manufacturers should offer a minimum of 32gb with higher options available. My opinion is that 16gb simply is not enough anymore.

No offense but your opinion is wrong. There is no need to make 32 the minimum. Many people don't want or need that. My Ultra came with 16GB and I have about 7GB free right now. Why should I lose the option I want just because you don't get it? I understand that for some people, their situation requires more storage, but why is it so hard for people who want more storage to fathom that some people don't? Is it really that difficult of a concept that different people have different needs?

Exactly! Two different users with the same phone. Each discovered they had different needs and for their next phone they got different phones which met their individual needs. I really don't get why that is so hard to grasp.
Someone please explain to me why that concept is so hard to understand.

Why do you have to store it on your phone in perpetuity, though? Just back it up to Google Drive, Google+, YouTube, or the drive on your computer for free. That way, should something happen to your phone, you still have the files. Are you really watching each video so often that they need to be available for instant playback at a moment's notice?

That's just the way I look at it.
