I want to root, but do sim cards matter?

I need to get a new sim card tomorrow because mine is useless. But, I want to root it now. Would you advise doing this, and if so should I do it with no sim card or the old sim card? When I put the new one in, will I just have to dial *228 and activate? Thanks!

under no circumstance dial *228 from a Thunderbolt--no matter what, no matter why or if any tech in VZW tells you to. it'll render your handset useless.
there are countless threads on people screwing up their phone b/c a vzw tech or sales person told them to dial *228 to activate their phone.
your phone will auto-provision itself, *228 is for CDMA phones on 3g only (i believe). LTE SIM phones don't require this dial code.

as for rooting---i'd NOT root it until you get the new SIM--just in case they try to pull a fast one on you and get you to trade in your current (possibly rooted) handset--which would then create a giant hassle.

Rooting should have no effect on your sim card, however.

If you haven't rooted it already, might as well wait at this point. As the others have mentioned, rooting you phone would have no effect, but...

I guess it depends on why you're getting a new SIM. If it's because there is an issue with the phone, probably best to wait in case the new SIM doesn't fix it, in the event you have to trade the entire device in. If that's not the case and you know that's an unlikely situation, then I can't see any reason why rooting it now would make a difference.

Activating a new 4G SIM card

I dialed *228 before and my TB works fine, but doesn't matter because that's not the way you go about activating Verizon's 4G devices.

When you receive your new SIM card, the easiest way to go about activating it would be on verizonwireless.com. Just login and go to activate a new device. It will recognize that you have a TB on your line and will require you to activate the SIM card. Continue the process and indicate that you have a new SIM card. Enter the information that it requires and you will be able to activate the SIM card. It's a little different from activating 1x/3G devices because now it's kind of like your activating the SIM card rather than the device itself.

I would suggest NOT inserting the SIM card into the TB until you activate it on verizonwireless.com or calling a customer service.

Also, just to remind you if you activate a SIM card on one line, it is permanently attached to that number. It cannot be transfered to another number. If you have a new number, that means you need a new SIM card, just to give you a heads up. I had to learn this the extremely hard way and wound up with a $300 excess data usage fee that I still have to clear up with Verizon.
