No news, but hopes.

I have owned the Optimus S for a good while now. Although I will be upgrading soon, I would absolutely be thrilled to see ICS come to this phone before I do. I see roms for many other phones (not working well though), even lower end phones, popping up.

I think ICS would run great on this phone dispite its hardware. Google is full of crap when they say ics wouldnt run well on old phones- I want to see it happen.

so since I know no other way, this is how I am going to let the developers know there is some sort of demand for even the little phones. Heck, I think the developers should charge a small $5 for roms, because I certainly would pay to have updates sooner and it may give more incentive.

so ics looks great and would be great on this phone!

this is just imagination, but could you imagine if the developement became profit driven to where you could go down an organized list of phones and their complete roms for purchase (at the price of a single app)? I think it would speed development up. the Jailbreak community is insanely fast at developing for apple products, even though they are not profit driven either, they have more focus on individual products. With profit, there could be more developers working on more phones. I know I have no influence, but just my opinion.

my rant, comment if you agree or disagree.

No they do make money because most people donate to the developers who make the rom

This is a common misconception. If we made money (and I don't mean a $5 donation here and there) we wouldn't need the donation button on every release.

The reality is, we don't make much at all for what we do. Honestly it rounds out to MAYBE a few cents per hour spent. Clearly we don't expect to make a living doing this otherwise we would have quit a long time ago.

So (and I really am not trying to be a jerk here) don't assume ANYTHING about what it is we do because unless you are doing it as well you probably know very very little about the facts of the matter.

And the fact of the matter is that no, in fact most people DON'T donate anything which is why we are so so so so so grateful towards those who do.

Oh and to the OP: I like a lot of your ideas and I think that given the chance, most people WOULD pay even $0.99 for a ROM/theme/kernel/whatever. There's a LOT more to it but yeah I agree with the basic concept.

if i had a job and the money i would donate every chance i get even if i dont use or like the software. i respect what every developers does for the android community and i wish to one day become one. To the original topic i would love to see that happen one day might have to put up more post to get more people involved

As dumb as this is, I ignore the donate button even when I am very greatful for many of the things I get for free. If, though, I was forced to pay for it, I would surely and gladly.

being entirely open source and free is great (i frequently take advantage of it), but it doesnt get things done quite as well as even slightly more profit driven methods.

linux for example, is awesome but will never really go anywhere because it is just so open. Those distros that have actually made an impact are those that have set standards.
