Android Central Question

I have GS8+ and just did latest update, now there are frames around icons that were turned off before update, I went into settings-display and chose icons only and still frames, being that I am not the only one with this issue what can we do to fix this?

I have the same issue! Also badge app icon numbers is messed up. For WhatsApp and email and others it doesn't show the amount of unread on the app icon

My icon frames issue was being controlled by the themes I had applied. It was on for one theme, and not the next, while the option in settings was greyed out.

Returning to the default theme gives me the option again to turn icon frames on and off.

I am not using themes, was able to select the option to remove icon frames. But it does nothing. All of the Google apps still have frames around them!

Unfortunately with the new Oreo update all the Google apps are setup to match the Samsung apps so they are that way as default, this is not a frames issue anymore. This is the default look of the icon now.

This is why most people stuck with Android...the ability to tweek these little nuances...sad and apple like.

Probably another launcher can fix this, e.g. Nova
Nova does not help. You can pick among the usual rounded, square, squircle, teardrop or default frames, but it still puts a box around a lot of icons that used to not have them. I don't like it either. I liked them better before.

You can also get a different icon pack from the Samsung theme app.

Yes that is true except the Samsung Icon pack from their theme store does not theme all the icons except the Samsung icons but with Nova and other Icon packs you can find some with over 3000 icons themed.

Get Nova, install Moonshine icon pack. You'll probably love it. It says right there in the description that it's designed to be free form because not all icons are supposed to look alike.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nexbit.icons.moonshine

Also there's an option in Nova to 'prefer legacy icons' so that it will ignore framing.

Yes that's true. I use Nova Prime and Pixel IP myself on my S8+.

I don't want to change my entire launcher just to be able to remove icon frames in Pie. If I choose a Samsung icon set from the Samsung Store, what happens to the 3rd party app icons that the icon set doesn't support? Do the icon frames show or not for those apps?
