can anyone tell me what the two squares with arrows in them mean on my status bar?

If you have no use for NFC (Near Field Communications, which allows you to share info or files just by bringing the device close to another device and tapping a button), go to Settings>Wireless & Networks​, tap More, then uncheck NFC.

You can also turn it off right from the pull down notification area, at the very top where all the other toggles are (sound, wifi , etc).
