Ics confirmed for thunderbolt!

Be careful what you wish for! ICS on the Thunderbolt could introduce a bunch of bugs or worse bring back the random reboots! As far as I'm concerned, the Thunderbolt rocks on Gingerbread! No need for ICS. I'll look for that on a future phone..... like the Thunderbolt 2!!!!! :p

Over-rationalize much?

The negative sentiment that some people show in this thread has some merit... All the major manufacturer's have a history of leaving a device in the dust if it is not cost effective. It all depends on if HTC can shrink Android 4.0+Sense 4.0 down enough to be functional on a single core processor and 768 MB of RAM, which is extremely unlikely.

But there are some people that lose sight of practicality and are just blindly negative. For those people, yes, I completely agree with your sarcasm.

If ICS can end up on a G1, it can go on anything.

Add Sense 4.0 to that G1 and tell me it can fit. The G1 was the first HTC Android phone and it never got updated to Sense because of its low hardware specs, and also never received a manufacturer update past Android 1.6 because of cost effectiveness. I'm sure you could shoehorn ICS on a Motorola Devour just the same... would it work that well? Probably not, but you *could* do it.

Don't know if this has been said before but I think the Thunderbolt can handle ICS, just don't know about ICS plus Sense. The Tbolt has better specs than the Nexus S, and you know it will get it.

If HTC/VZW decide to update the Tbolt to ICS, owners of the Incredible 2 will have a legitimate claim for it as well, because they are basically the same phone. I'm not sure they will mess with updating either phone.

With that being said though, HTC has a good record of updating their phones. My complaint if we don't get updated is that VZW took away our option for annual upgrades/one year contracts and the way the technology keeps changing some are stuck with old technology until late 2012 or 2013. Which don't matter to most people, but it bothers us techies.

If HTZ Eco Design is getting ICS I see no reason why TBolt won't. Same single core CPU with only 200MHz difference in clock speed. Replace WiMAX drivers with drivers for MQM9600 and you would have a working ICS build for TBolt.

Yeah, but I'm stuck with mine until Nov. 2012, so that's why I want this so bad.

Then I would suggest you root your TB. Once you root your TB you can flash a new
rom with A newer version (2.3.7) of gingerbread and the hopefully in the near future ICS
which is probably in the works as we speak.

I must say my EVO 4G running Cyanogenmod 7.1 with gingerbreand 2.3.7 IMO runs much
better then the OTA 2.3.3. And battery life with a custom kernel just make it mouch more
worth while.

One more thing that I found is that when I flashed CM7 to my rooted EVO.
Was that I gained alot of internal storage space. It seems the factory Android
running sense plus all the bloatware takes a ton of space compared to
AOSP (Android Open Source Project) rom.

There is no way that the Thunderbolt and the Incredible2 are basically the same phone. The Incredible2 is a 3g device. Is is global for those that travel outside the US.
Thunderbolt is 4g. It also works in 3g. Is NOT global. Itvalso does voice and data at the same time on 3 and 4 g.
There are many differences.

I'm rooted so I'm not even gonna wait on HTC to get it's act together. Already CM9 alpha's are showing up on some devices so it's only a matter of time.

TwistedUmbrella already has an alpha build for the Thunderbolt with working wifi and touchscreen. The hardware buttons work and the software buttons are there too. Stuff is getting fixed fast! Check it out if you're rooted.....

I must search for this.

Agreed, GB is working just fine for me, so I'd had to get something that brings back bugs. Of course, it's always fun to get something new & different for my toy, so I would gladly take it.

You noted the differences between the two phones. If everything was identical in the phones, it wouldn't be basically the same phone... It would be the same phone. Internally they are running the same processor and the same amount of RAM. I'm just saying if the Tbolt can handle ICS, so could the INC2.

The Thunderbolt's OTA Gingerbread update was 2.3.4, which comes with Gtalk Video. Otherwise, I completely agree with this post.

A vanilla ROM overall boasts the best performance due to its lack of the resource-heavy Sense UI, although I have still found that running BAMF Forever (Sense 3.0) with Imoseyon's Lean Kernel has better performance *and* battery life that the stock Thunderbolt ROM running the graphically lighter-weight Sense 2.1. Funny how that works...

Actually it makes sense. Sense 3.0 is less resource intensive than earlier versions - it got better over time with more development.

And with ICS being a riff off of Honeycomb it probably needs Dual Core to run at reasonable speed. The Honeycomb ports to single core tablets have not been pretty.

I seriously doubt ICS is coming to the tbolt. Based upon history the info puts ICS at best in the 2nd half of '12, and probably closer to 01/1/13. By that time i'll be looking for a tbolt replacement, hopefully some 4x or 8x core phone running ICS's successor.

Well, let's hope that HTC rep is correct and that ICS will come to the TBolt from HTC. It will likely be much later in 2012 than what this rep has indicated, though.

The tbolt should be able to run it without sense 4.0 that will be the major hurdle (as everyone has said) so I think we will have a better chance of a fairly good performing ICS install from CM7 or an ASOP rom

I e-mailed HTC and they confirmed a ICS release for the ThunderBolt "early in 2012". Yay! :D

Sniff Sniff .. Sniff Sniff (wrinkles nose) I smell Bull Shat !:p

ICS is not coming to an end of life phone on VZW. First of all after HTC does a work up, then it needs to go through Verizon an they aren't going to go through the process for and EoL phone.

Nice try tho !

It will happen Google stated that it had worked with OEM's to ensure that devices would be upgraded for 18 months.
Stop being so pessimistic.
