well.. there is potentially good news and bad news.

the good, is that ICS should clear that up (cause it will be past the 2.3.4 mark where the video calling was a part of google talk).... the Bad news is its gonna be a WHILE (imo) til the my touch 4G gets ICS officially (JellyBean will probably be official before you see ICS on that phone). However, just root (jailbreak) it and you will have the latest and greatest MUCH MUCH sooner!!

Phone bone LOL no. And vtok and tango you can use 3g on iPhone. I only video from wifi anyway.

Well.. Yes and no.. here is the biggest problem with Android IMO... all these damn manufactures keep turning out new devices every month and basically making people upgrade to get all the latest stuff. it sucks and is a HUGE problem (again.. these are all just my opinion). I am REALLY hoping that ICS will stop at least some of this as google and several of the manufactures have reportedly made some arrangements for timely updates of "older" (you know.. like 3 months haha) devices!

I absolutely HATE apple and everything about them.. however, this is one area that they did right! pretty sure you can get IOS 5 on the 3gs right now as in the day its out. now you might not get all the bells and whistles due to hardware limitations, but you get (for the most part) the newest OS that they offer!

Very true. Thanks for the insight man.

Good side of all this is that most phones can easily be rooted and have the latest stuff loaded on to it way before the manufacturer releases anything(if they ever do).
I'll be getting the new Nexus when it comes out and my gf will inherit my DINC2 and I would expect ICS to be on it very shortly after. I wouldn't be surprised if it(or at least some of the more popular phones) gets ICS unofficially before the Nexus even releases.

I hope my gs2 gets it tomorrow lol

The new "People" app they announced yesterday with ICS should address this if I'm understanding you. It is the new stock contacts app and it associates a contact with not only their phone number and email but also any other social networks and such that they are on. This would allow you to view the contact and launch a chat with that person right from the app. Of course the other person would have to be logged on but in my experience no one ever really logs off Google Chat unless they don't want to be contacted at that time. I'm almost always just in "idle" mode.

Why do they always come up with a great idea only to isolate themselves with ideas that can not work on all platforms. We have IPhones, Itouch, IPads, and Android phones. FaceTime would be great for our family to share images of ourselves, or an object we just saw with all our family phones. We will never just be an all apple family, just to many other choices that are also great products. So we will be looking at the Google Talk option to use both cameras on our phones. Once we have that working what would be the point in using FaceTime? This only supports my dislike for small thinking closed platforms. If they have such a great product, make it even greater by working with everyone. Don't trick people into buying a product that only works with itself. I am becoming a great user of Google apps. Others as well.

G ary

P.s. Just getting tired of being tricked into using something all the time.

I don't see how it could be supported without google talk. However, if the contacts are integrated (phone and google talk), one should see all possible actions.

I don't think there will ever be a "facetime" for Android, where you don't need "a separate app" or some kind of login/user. Simply because Android and iOS follow different philosophies...

Apple implements all the base functions and extra niceties in the OS, and strictly protects that.

Meanwhile, Google gives a base system with hooks and possibilities, and the onus is on the users/OEMs/carriers to fill the gaps how they like it.

Creates a bit more chaos than the iOS way, yet more freedom (as mentioned in the many replies).

Good and bad with both approaches, the problem IMO comes when you try to think one way when you use the other product. If you're on apple, sure use Facetime! If you're on Android use gtalk/skype/tango. If you need multi-platform video chat, use skype/tango/etc...

There are definitely other apps available for video chat. Tango, Fring, Google Talk, Skype. The nice thing is that most of them are cross-platform, so you can chat across Android and iPhone.

Why do you hate apple? if you do not mind me asking? Has apple done anything personal to harm you? Did apple take your girlfriend/boyfriend? Did apple corner you in an alley and beat you up?Or do you just not enjoy their products or their business practices and as a result you hate them?

i HOPE ICS implements is some type of facetime where we dont need a dedicated app to video chat with other android phones running ICS. Anyone think they will integrate it? Or have you read anything about it?
iOS integrates the phone app with the Contacts app so that you can "call via face time. ICS assumes that you'll only use the phone within the phone app - so only phone numbers are shown from the People app.

If you want to video-call them on ICS, go to the People app and pick the method and ICS will start the app and call. For example, if I want to use Skype to video call Bob, I'd pick video-call via Skype on Bob's record in the People app. ICS would then open Skype and video-call Bob.

Where iOS may appear easier, its limited to only Face time within the dialer. To do the same Skype example, you'd have to manually open Skype and call Bob.

IMHO, ICS is better- although slightly more complex - because there are MANY ways of doing the same thing.

Another case of this is iMessage.
