ICS for thunderbolt before GB?

No I doubt it. It is possible but, they have GB in testing phases an tooling around with VZWs LTE services. After the crap storm they recieved from all the reboot issuse they would be committing suicide if they pushed out an un-polished OTA

Read an article about how Ice Cream Sandwich could possibly out as soon as October...

Do you think HTC would hold off on Gingerbread and just go straight to ICS?

Is it even possible or do you need GB to be able to upgrade to ICS?

Here is the article:
AndroidSPIN Androids Next OS, Ice Cream Sandwich, May Hit as Soon As October
I'm pretty sure I've read that HTC has gone on record that there will be no ICS for the Thunderbolt. For technical and/or marketing reasons. I don't think it's a release date timing issue :)

Don't quote me on this, but I thought ice cream sandwich requires dual core processor?

i would like to see this. I never heard the TB wouldn't get ics. I don't see why it wouldn't. Phones like the Nexus S will surely get it not to mention didn't htc say all their phones will receive updates for a while? I forgot how long. I doubt they would make an OS and completely shun out their other phones.

There has not been a statement from HTC anywhere that I've seen stating that the TB won't get ICS. There have been, however, people in the forums saying the TB won't get ICS but that is based on their opinion. Google did say that, in agreement with their manufacturing partners, phones would continue to be upgraded for up to 18 months from their launch as long as the hardware allowed it. So, until I see a statement from HTC clearly saying that TB won't get ICS, I will assume otherwise.

I don't know if there's been anything "official", but I was under the impression that there were certain hardware requirements for ICS that the Thunderbolt didn't meet. Not only that, but I'd bet it'll be a while yet before a lot of phones start getting ICS, even if it is ready to be released in October, or whatever. It might hit a few phone models this year, but I'd think the majority would get it next year.

Plus, rumors are suggesting a new 4G HTC phone will be out on Verizon in October, to "replace" the Thunderbolt, so it seems pretty likely that we'll stop seeing "official" software releases for the Thunderbolt once this new phone comes out. I expect Gingerbread to eventually hit the Thunderbolt, and maybe a patch or two if there are any major problems or flaws with it, but after that, I don't see HTC doing anything more with the phone.

From what I've read, ICS will be optimized to take advantage of dual core devices. But There are a lot of single core phones out there that are pretty high end and should be able to handle it. I don't see any reason the TB wouldn't get ICS.

I'm sure we'll be able to get ICS on the Thunderbolt, it'll just be a question on if we have to do it ourselves or not :D

I think it will be a long time before the TB gets ICS though. I don't think VZ will release it until like january. That's why you root.

Wouldn't GB be the toughest hurdle? If they got it running smooth with all the TB radios wouldn't a transition from GB to ICS be a lot easier? Wouldn't HTC have at least a base on what they would need to do, where as with GB it has been trial and error?

That'd be a date assumption were that a google phone in your hands. The nexus is a google phone, the thunderbolt is an htc phone. Also any software optimized for multiple cores is implicitly optimized for one. Ics included. Also the transition from gb to ics would be no easier than the transition from froyo to gb. In short I don't expect ics in the tb, at least not for another six to eight months.

People who root might get ICS for their TB's. But for the rest of us, by the time Verizon gets around to approving ICS for the Thunderbolt, we will all be out of our contracts and have moved on to newer phones.

I would be hard pressed to think ICS for the TB, but I would like to be surprised...
