ICS Update

Got the ICS update via Kies (used the phone in download mode - tools - firmware upgrade route) worked seamlessly in about 30 mins. So far so good. I had each of the 2 leaks on my phone and 1st had many forced closes and freezes, second not so many but some, so far so good for the first 2 hours - will try and remember to come back and edit this post in a day or so.

One goodie I noticed so far as I restore my apps - 2 apps that wouldn't install under the previous leaks installs now (the CBS Fantasy Baseball app and ScreenSlider), hope you find that too!

I have a GNex too and just read that Jelly Bean is pushing to that today as well.

Is this Android Nirvana or what!!!

Could you explain in more detail how you got the ics upgrade. Thanks.

a bit disappointed to see kies has problems with vista. And its not available ota. Att another fail. Guess i gotta wait until i buy a laptop to get ics as mine is a heap of junk on vista :-(

Dude really? Nothing works on Vista....it was the biggest failure that MS ever released. As for AT, Kudos for releasing this even though it was not compatible with Vista....

You can't have it both ways...if they test further, oh shame on ATT for delaying the release of ICS for my Note....I'm sure the Vista users are a Minority now a days anyway.

Not bashing you perse, but It seems that Carriers are dammed if they do, and dammed if they don't.

AS for me...Just really wishing I still had my Note. SGS3 is great, but the Note brought something unique to the table.

If your have the latest version of Kies and connect your phone it should auto detect the update. If not use the method below. It has worked for many. I already posted it a page back for someone else but it still applies.

Put your phone in download mode. Load up the Kies Software. Select Tools>Firmware upgrade and initialization option. Input your S/N and Model exactly as it is seen on the box/back of phone. This means Caps will be necessary where present.

Click okay and away you go. I went from a rooted custom ROM called The Hybrid back to Stock ICS using this very method. I also have got CWM Touch and Root access.

I hear you. Just disappointed about it not working with vista. I never want to root my phone to put ics on it. So not upset about att taking long. Just upset that they dont provide ota. Yep vista is a heap of junk all the issues. But hey you live and learn.

My wife is trying to update kies, however it keeps crashing about 20 secs after hitting the update button for kies. She has uninstalled and reinstalled it but same outcome. She has windows 7, so the Vista issue is not the problem. Anyone have any clues as to what the issue might be?

OK, so I put it in download mode.

I did Tools -> Firmware Upgrade and Initialization

I put in my S/N

In Model Name I put SGH-i717

I pressed OK and it complained about the model name.

What did I do wrong? Is it wanting the IMEI Number, or the SKU? I don't have my box with me, but I took the battery out and it said Model: SGH-i717, had my serial number, but also had the IMEI and SKU that I'm curious about.

Thanks in advance. Hoping to get the default ICS rom after being on the 2nd leak for a while.

Do you know how to put your Gnex into "download mode" (turn off - then turn on while holding the down volume key - let go the start button - you will get the first screen warning you about what you are about to do - hit the up volume key - now you are in download mode)

Start Kies. Plug the phone in by usb. Kies may or may not see your phone (it did NOT see mine). In Kies hit "Tools" then "firmware upgrade and initialization". You will get a screen asking you to put in your S/N (serial number - it's in small numbers and letters under the battery on the white tag there) and the model name (which is SGH-I717 - make sure you use capital letters only). Then click OK.

From there if you entered correctly Kies will download the update first and then install it. Should take all in all 30-40 mins (my guess I didn't time it but thats what it felt like) and when it's done - voila.

One warning - your phone will be wiped to a factory clean condition. You will have to re-install apps.

Hope that's clear - it worked for me - I hope it works for you!

Sweet goodness!!!! Finally got ICS updated to my Note using Vista. Couldn't get access to a computer with a different OS so figured I give it another shot on my laptop with Vista and Kies went through. .. Bring on Jelly Bean now.... haha j/k I doubt we will see JB . Life can be bitter sweet sometimes. lol.

The model name must be in all caps for the letters so SGH-I717 - you had the small i from what I see above

Edit: I got it. I had originally side-loaded it from XDA, but now with ICS, I just had to delete the old app and get the latest one from the play store.

Been getting the error "failed to run firmware. unknown error occurred". Samsung says servers are busy and thats why. Sounds strange to me seeing as i've tried DLing the update at 2-3 in the morning and on and off throughout the day.

The update is not available OTA. Meaning it cant be done through the phone itself. It can only be done via PC using the Samsung Kies software.

Well, this is my firs ttime updating a Samsung Android device. I just think it's kinda weird that, even more than 24 hours after it's initial release, there are still problems with the server being busy for DL. I've never experienced this on BB or iOS. I will try tomorrow

I did my upgrade Tuesday night and the servers worked then. Most people didnt realize there was an update or that it wasnt available through the phone itself and only via PC and Kies. So it could just be that the servers are getting nailed more now than they were the first couple of nights due to it.

The only thing I could say is try the method I have posted about with the Tools>Firmware upgrade and initialization. It might work better than just the normal upgrade option.
