If there is an update, must the phone be stock?

If this mystery update does happen, will our phones have to be returned to stock ROM/kernal in order to see it? Can we stay rooted? Thanks.

Most of the time, when there are updates sent through to the phones, it will only affect the stock phones and not the non rooted ones. Sometimes this is not true, it is all going to depend on what kind of update is eventually sent out.
