I'm calling it

Right on that's the way to be! I've been an android user for 3 years now and I'm on the fence about rooting just because I don't have insurance and can't brick my phone. I've only had my Gnex for a couple of months and I know it's the easiest phone to root so I'm going to try and teach myself. The Nexus is an amazing device stock but having complete control over it and being able to apply amazing themes as well makes rooting that much more tempting. I'm waiting on this ota and then the fun will begin. I wish there was a class I could take. lol

Just read the hacking section on this phone. Wugs is the easiest way. I just used it the other day cause I'm lazy. But worked perfect. Just read all the instructions first, then if your comfortable proceed. If not don't do it. I waited six months since I don't have insurance, but couldn't take being stock anymore. Now that I did it, I wish I wouldn't had waited.

This.. Plus not only is it the easiest phone to unlock and root.. But it's virtually unbrickable.. And if you aren't satisfied you can restore the factory images in about 5 minutes, relock the bootloader, and Verizon will NEVER know, so the warranty fear is moot.

My main concern was warranty issues. I've rooted every android I've had, but since I don't own a working computer, was just concerned if something happened warranty wise I'd be screwed. But with six months and no real issues in workmanship, I decided to just go for it.

No issues if you turn it back to stock. It doesn't immediately void your warranty; Verizon has to void it by election.

Exactly. This fear behind unlocking is based either on misinformation or the unknown. The GNexus is the easiest phone to revert to stock. Guys, I've reverted to stock at least 3 times with no problems everytime and it took like literally 5-10 minutes. I've reverted to stock on the Fascinate and the Droid Charge before as well (many times). The GNexus is way simpler and faster. Seriously. This simplicity goes for installing Roms/Kernels as well. It couldn't be easier on the GNexus.

I could be way off base here, but I sometimes wonder if the naysayers who don't Root (especially the unhappy campers), don't unlock/root/Rom based off fear but mask it as "choice"?

You should look into Motorola phones. Locked bootloader and all, right up your alley...

Don't be an a$$. Just because I don't want to root my Nexus, doesn't mean I want a phone running a crappy proprietary version of Android. People who root their Nexus truly are the minority. Just because you're the loud minority, doesn't change the fact....

I just love the misconceptions about the Nexus line. It's an awesome phone, but people get wrapped up in the folklore of it. Reminds me of when I had a Sprint Nexus, that came with free wifi tethering out of the box. The folks on this site and others kept insisting that since this is a "pure google phone", that Sprint couldn't turn this feature off and make everybody pay for tethering. Wrong. An update was released soon thereafter, which took the feature away.

The majority of Nexus owners don't visit this forum or any other Android forum, much less root their device.

Based on the fact that I have rooted every android device I've ever owned, but had no reason to install a custom ROM until the Nexus, I would say it's choice.
I wasn't afraid to install a ROM, just didn't need to do it.

It's absolutely your right to buy the Nexus and do nothing with it.

But if you come to an enthusiast forum to whine and reject solutions that people offer, you should expect condescending responses like, "Perhaps something along the Droid line is more your speed..."

I never whined, and I was not asking for a solution. Where do you come up with this stuff? I'm fine waiting for the official update. Was simply standing up for another dude that was criticized for not rooting

Venom re-directed towards that poster then

I called Verizon tonight and they are sensing me a new Droid Razr Maxx to replace my Gnex

Obviously there not pushing the update so every one would buy the razr or the Maxx they don't care about the nexus they made there money off it already then they released 2 different razrs why would they want a up to date phone on there network then no one would buy there new Droid phones when they come out claiming to be better then every other phone on there network

Did the phones listed in your post receive their upgrades to ICS?

I'm curious because I installed the OTA for 4.0.4 Saturday morning.

Honestly I would guess only about 40% of the Nexus users aren't rooting their phone. And don't even care about receiving the OTA update via Verizon. For those highly anticipated with our phones (like myself) I purchased the phone went home and had it rooted and unlocked along with the 4.0.4 update installed in literally 15 minutes. Its not rocket science nor is it even technical anymore. Automated unlocking boot loader and root non the less self installing cwm. If your complaining about going on your computer and clicking you mouse a few times to manually get the update instead of complaining about Verizon maybe you should go to another carrier.
60% of nexus owners are devs and modders or just people that like to tinker with phones. This is why the nexus was such a great hit. Along with it initially being released with 4.0 android software.
Also you need to note that some users are those who just want a higher end phone that won't crash and aren't even aware that there is even a new software out there yet.

Also remember where and who this phone attracts. Mostly tech savy people looking to root and modify their phones. As for the other. What business men who never even heard of rooting or unlocking let alone what software's there are for the phones. Hell most they may know is that its touch screen and has a camera hahaa :p

I've heard that 68% of all statistics are made up. Congrats for being in the majority :p
