IM use SMS or data?

Do most of the all-in-one IM apps like Beejive, IM Plus, Nimbuzz and IMO use SMS or data for sending and receiving IMs? What about the official apps?

That's good to know. I was trying VZW Mobile IM until I realized it uses SMS. I don't have unlimited messaging, so must be careful.
