Image attachments in Gmail

When someone sends me an email with picture attachments, there are empty boxes above each caption and all the pictures are bunched up together at the bottom. But if I open the same email in Firefox or Chrome on my laptop they display correctly. Is there a setting in android 4.4 on my nexus 5 to correct this? I can't find any under Gmail settings.
