IMAP credentials

I have emails from my "icloud" IMAC Mail system copied to my Pixel 6a, and that has worked fine for many months.
All of a sudden, the Google Mail app on my phone alerts "Correct credentials needed" for the incoming email account. That is an IMAP account not gmail.
I cannot satisfy this request after exhaustive efforts. Maybe it is the password (that has an X beside the field when I try to sign in), but none of the many combinations of passwords I use will satisfy the system.
How do I get this working again?

Welcome to Android Central! Sometimes email systems require you to use an app password that's generated by their system, rather than the usual password you use for that account. Yahoo does this as well. See this help page: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102654

Thank you so much for this - I regenerated an app specific password and that corrected everything. I have been fighting this problem for several days but just could not get the correct combination of words into Google, then I thought about finding a forum.
This forum is now in my bookmarks ......... just in case.
