IMing Texting Chatting

I just received my Droid X today, and believe it or not, I've never texted anyone.

I don't want to pay the extra $5 for 250 texts per month (I think it's ridiculous that it's not under the $30/month unlimited data plan).

Is texting and IMing the same thing? And is there a way still to IM someone without using the "texting system"?

You could use google talk

Texting is really just chat or instant messaging over the phone network. As the previous poster said, gtalk is a good substitute, but then all your correspondents need to be on gtalk.
For texting, I recommend getting and using a google voice account. It's free and can be used seamlessly thru your Android phone.
