immersive mode?

One if the new features of 4.4 that I read about was immersive mode - where the home buttons hide on certain apps. I would imagine chrome should be one of them, but this doesn't seem to be happening. Am I missing something? I tried chrome, newsstand, currents, etc.

I have the GEL installed as well, if that matters.

So far, it only works in Google Play Books. Expect other apps to implement this going forward.

OK cool thanks. I guess I just assumed that Google would have implemented in their own apps at launch, particularly for newsstand which is new.

Looking forward to this in Chrome.

Just a reminder. If you don?t want to wait for app devs to implement immersive mode, you can choose to install a custom ROM that has ?full-screen mode?.
ParanoidAndroid and Cyanogenmod both have had this for quite a while.

Does that work same as kit kat's immersive mode or needs some weird gestures to show/hide the buttons? That sounds nice but I don't want to freak out if I won't be able to access to my buttons in some particular apps. That really needs to be stable.

It's not exactly the same as Immersive Mode.
What happens is there's a toggle in the popup menu when you long-press the power button to get into Full-Screen Mode.
Once toggled on, the nav and status bars get hidden. It's system-wide so it doesn't matter what app you're in.
To bring the nav and status bars back, you'll have to toggle off Full-Screen Mode. But it is still possible to navigate without the nav bar by using PIE controls. You bring it up by swiping in from the side of the screen. A popup menu includes the typical Back, Home, and Recent-apps buttons.
This is actually difficult to describe in words. I'd suggest searching on YouTube for people demoing this feature.

It works very well. And since it's been around for quite a while, it's stable enough that many users just stay in Full-Screen Mode all the time.

FBReader, the best ebook reader, just released an update adding support for Android 4.4 immersive mode.
