I finally got the nerve to Root and load a custom ROM onto my Charge. The difference between this phone stock and with Altered Beast is simply amazing. I didn't notice how much lag this phone had before. But everything is so buttery smooth now.

I suggest to everyone that has not done so yet, to just start reading the rooting threads and poke around over there. There are some amazing things being done for our Charge. Get the nerve up and try it out.

I want to do exactly this, butter i need some assistance and a guide. Any tips/pointers?

To be honest, the guides are very simple. Just read through the entire directions before you begin. Don't over complicate it in your mind. Really after you download and install the needed files, the rooting and Rom flashing procedures are just basically one click ordeals.

I'm just waiting for my 2 week period to expire, to make sure I decide to keep it, though I'm sure I will, and to make sure there's nothing wrong with it that I need a warranty exchange for. Maybe by then we'll have some betas. But I love how much the devs have already given us, thanks so much guys!

I've tried rooting with Gingersnap, but can't get it working. It says my phone has been rooted and is not rebooting...but my phone just sits there. And yes, I'm in debugging mode.

I just used Odin, Gingersnap didn't work for me either. Fear not, Odin is just as simple.

Yeah...after flashing to Altered Beast, I saw a superuser icon in my apps list. Do you happen to know what to use to remove or freeze bloatware?

Titanium backup.

If you downgrade to ED1 I heard there are some sketchy implications to rooting with this method, which is why I'm patiently waiting for a ed2 root.

Sorry for the dumb question but what are the big benefits of rooting your phone? Is it comparable to shooting a camera in the raw vs. JPEG?

Just want to know what I am getting into if I decide to undergo this operation.

You can get better performance out of you phone, remove bloatware, and best of all custom roms

In this case like running altered beast in voodoo, it will convert the filing system from rfs to ext 4 format. The rfs is known to be a little laggy, and the ext 4 completely eliminates that. You also end up with a different rom that has different look and feel due to the theme that it has. The icons looks different etc etc etc, you can also theme over the roms on top off that.

Is there any battery life benefit to rooting?

I really don't feel as though this phone is laggy for what I do day-to-day. I'm not sure that is reason enough to make me want to root it.

I can run custom themes on GO Launcher or LP, too.

I'm hoping there are more benefits than I'm aware of, currently.

I have noticed a better battery life (maybe due to the frozen bloatware). The ROMs also change some of the icons that a launcher won't (battery, signal, etc).

More benefits would be being able to use other apps like a free wi-fi (pretty huge), Netflix (hopefully soon), etc. On top of this we will be able to update and change things easily without waiting for the Verizon OTA updates.

I didn't think the lag was that bad either, and it really isn't, but once you root and use it you'll notice it's 10x faster. It's hard to explain until you see it in person and how much smoother the phone operates.

Thanks, that's useful info.

How much better is the battery life? 10%... 50%?
Sadly, I run 3G most days so I can get through the day with battery remaining. If I try to run 4G all day, I simply can't make it. If I could root and gain this, I'd be very thrilled to give it a go.

There is a lot of bloatware on the phone, but since DroidXcon just posted, I'll ask him here -- how did you decide what to remove and what to leave? I'll admit I'll never use Rockband, but I will use Allshare since I have a samsung TV. So what did you leave and what did you remove (not specifically, unless you have a list handy, but you know, in theory) Thanks! Definitely looking forward to installing your ROM soon...
