I am a senior and brand new to the world of smart phones so please go easy on me with the technical talk. My Samsung Galaxy S III will accept incoming cell phone calls but not land based calls. How can I correct this issue? Thank you.

Welcome to the forums, and to the world of (often confusing and frustrating) smartphone technology!
Can you be a little more specific about what happens when a land-based call comes in?
- does the phone even ring?
- if it rings, what happens when you swipe to accept the call?
- is it just one person calling from a land-based phone that this happens with, or is it everyone?
- is it a REAL land-based telephone or some alternate solution (like MagicJack)?

Nothing happens on my end. The caller is told that it is a non-working number. I've asked four friends to ring and all receive the same message. All are real land based phones.

This sounds like a carrier issue, not a phone problem. Assuming you bought this phone new with service from one of the carriers, I'd take it to a carrier store and explain the problem to them.
