Incredible USB problems

I have checked many of the other threads here, but nothing I have found fits the bill. Here is the issue as best as I can describe:

When connecting my Incredible (Android 2.2) to my PC (Windows XP ,SP3) via USB,

1. Sometimes the PC sees the drives but I can't access them.
2. Sometimes the PC doesn't see the drives.
3. Sometimes everything works as it is supposed to and I have a good Droid to PC connection.

The Droid always shows that it is charging when attached via USB, but there is nothing listed in the notification area. Default connection type is "Disk drive" in "Settings">"Connect to PC" and "Ask me" is checked.

I have tried Unmounting and re-mounting the SD card, using different USB ports on the PC, nothing seems to work. It is the USB cable that came with the Droid and is about 1 week old.

I just switched from Blackberry to Droid. BIG differance, some good, some bad. Maybe just a learning curve. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you are using HTC Sync, uninstall and reinstall the program, this will replace the HTD Drivers.

If the problem continues and you are having intermittent issues with other USB devices, and you are on a Windows machine, try reinstalling the USB Root Hubs.

In Device Manager, expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section -> Right click and uninstall all the USB Root Hub entries. If you are prompted to remove the drivers as well as the device say NO. Then reboot.

All the USB Hubs will reinstall on reboot.

If this does not work try uninstalling the Host controllers as well, again if you are prompted to remove the drivers say NO. Then reboot again, they will reinstall on reboot.

Corrupt USB drivers can display wonky USB device behavior.

Hope this helps

I don't use HTC Sync and have yet to have a problem with syncing to my computer. Could it be a cable issue? I use the one that came with the charger, but others may not work so well.

It could very well be the cable. I bought a cable from best buy, and it will only allow me to charge with it, it wont let me access the sd card with this cable.

I'm not 100% sure which of these corrected the problem, but one of them (or both) corrected the problem. Thank you very much! Since I had to restart the PC I decided it would be faster to perform both and then restart the PC.

I have a pretty good idea that it was the USB Root Hubs though. I tried a different peripheral to the USB port I use for the Droid and it didn't work. I tried plugging the Droid into the USB port that the peripheral worked in but the Droid did not connect, but when I put the other peripheral back in the port it did.

I didn't think it would be the cable since, as I said in my initial post, I am using the cable that came from the manufacturer with the device about a week ago. Although a break in one of the wires in the cable could have caused the intermittent problem.

At any rate, I am very happy with the outcome. Thank you PvilleComp for the corrective action. Thank you to everyone else for the speedy response and possible corrective actions.

Just a side note, I have a Jabra Cruiser (similar cable, same USB plug types), and after the above corrective actions, it will also allow the Droid to PC connection for data as well as charging. I plan on picking up another cable (probably from BestBuy) to see if it will work as well. I will post my results, with part numbers, when I have them.

Happy to help.

You should be OK with any standard Micro USB cable for bothe the DInc and the Jabra but people have reported charging problems with some of the cheaper USB cables out there.

I'm guessing the cheap ones don't wire all the pins.
