Innacurate battery percentage

So my phone dies from battery often, when i charge it, it shows 17% on the screen. Then when i turn the phone on its says 56%! Why is this happening?

The battery is bad and can no longer handle the natural voltage sag that occurs when you put a load on it. Your only option is to replace the battery. In the future it's recommended to keep between 40-80% in the battery for the best lifespan. Going outside that, especially if you drain to zero all the time, will shorten the life of the battery.
