Could someone quickly list the upgrade options to move from MM to Nougat?

1) dirty flash (OTA upgrade and reboot?)
2) dirty flash then factory data reset?
3) clean flash (what is this?... install with help from a PC?)
4) ?

Is my terminology correct?

Your terminology is slightly off, I believe Taking an official OTA isn't generally considered a dirty flash as it's usually just an update file... A "dirty flash" refers to installing a ROM over the top of an old one without wiping anything, wheres with a clean flash you would wipe data/cache/dalvik(ART).

If you manually flash the full system image in recovery it could technically be considered a dirty flash... But that doesn't actually mean anything bad will happen, it's just terminology.

You can add to your list manually downloading the OTA file and pushing it from a PC, or installing it from recovery, and doing the same with the full system image. There's a great other crazy and unnecessary things, but we won't go into them lol.

If you're still waiting on the OTA and want it NAO! download opera VPN and set your location to Germany.

Thanks, I know how to get it. I got 3.2.8 that way from Canada. I'm just trying to decide how I want to go about the update process.

The easiest way is to snag it OTA (using Opera VPN), install it, clean the system cache and reboot. If all works well, it will save me a ton of time and effort installing and tweaking all my apps (which I need to make a list of, just in case). But I'm undecided if I want to go that route or learn some new skills (which has its own perils).

I know what a clean install is from a pc perspective and am quite familiar with that process. But I have no clue how to do the same thing to my phone.

I have too much going on right now to deal with cleaning up a botched upgrade. So I'm holding off the upgrade while I ponder my options.

If you hold off now, you can watch and see what comes happens...

I wish someone could guarantee you a good upgrade experience... I have to say that the OnePlus One and now the OnePlus 3 upgrade experience seems to be generally good. I have not had to factory reset a oneplus device yet because of a bad upgrade experience (knock on all the wood on the known and unknown universe...). When I had my blackberry priv and it updated to Android 6.0 I had to do a factory reset - extremely annoying.

So I decided to hold my nose and jump in tonight.

I booted to the stock recovery and cleared the system cache. Then I enabled Opera VPN, switched region to Canada, and snagged the OOS 4 update and switched off the VPN during the download (to speed up the d/l process). From start to finish took between 10 and 15 minutes including optimizing 155 apps.

Interestingly, a couple of stock icons were missing (clock and contacts). But I located them in the apps and quickly put them back in place. I checked my APN settings and instead of 2 APNs, I had 4!
1) NEXTGENPHONE (nxtgenphone)
2) ATT PHONE (phone)
3) ATT WAP (wap.cingular)
4) ATT PHONE (phone)

I tested 1, 2, and 4 and can make calls, so it looks like my mobile data works fine. I think 2 and 4 are duplicates. I was using ATT PHONE on MM, but now am using NEXTGENPHONE on Nougat, but see no functional difference. I did not have to input any of my APN settings which is interesting, based on the experience of others where their settings were wiped.

After the installation and reboot, I simply had to choose my launcher (Nova), then went into settings and tweaked a few things (split screen on the recents button (long press), etc. I'll be a few days tweaking, most likely. I need to see what Messages is all about (vs Textra and Messaging).

But overall, a painless update from MM. I left my file system as EXT4 for now.

I'm happy to report this was totally a non-event.

I'm glad to hear that the update went well for you.
