I finally decided to root my phone using the amazing thread on these forums. I was wondering if there is a detailed guide out there for installing custom roms? After searching the forums I always see references to software such as Odin, Nandroid, Clockwork Mods Recovery, and ROM Manager.

Obviously I'm new to all of this and was wondering if there is some kind of comprehensive step-by-step guide to installing custom roms? It seems like most of you use JTs Super Clean rom and I was hoping to start using it as well.

Thanks for your help!

Download rom manager. There are a lot of custom roms that can be installed right from there.

Read here :

Know that there is stock recovery and CWR. If you install CMR like the above post, and you find yourself in stock recovery 2e, apply update.zip to get to CMR. Then just remember in Rom Manager that some stuff is for DI01 and DJ05. DI01 is what most new people people have. If you don't have CWR already, then you don't have DJ05. Just dont install DJ05 stuff if your phone is on DI01.

The Back "soft" key is select in CMR and home is "select" in 2e.

Use non-voodoo kernels until you know what those are...

OK - so at a basic level...

1. Root your phone.
2. Download Nandroid Backup (where?)
3. Perform a full-backup.
4. Download ROM Manager from market.
5. Download and install Odin.
6. Open Odin (and apply CWMRecovery.tar file).
7. Download Flash ClockworkMod Recovery (in ROM Manager).
8. Reboot into recovery mode (hold left and right volume rockers and press the power button).
9. Download whatever ROM you want from ROM Manager and install?

Please correct me if I'm wrong in any of these steps!

That is the raw and very basic way to do it and sorta out of sequence..
I would suggest strongly that you spend some time in the different forums:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/fascinate-roms-hacks/35726-clockworkmod-recovery.html
&
Odin Restore files to get you to stock - xda-developers

before flashing anything.. There are some errors that are recoverable and some that are not - trust me.

I spent days going over the forum pages, and downloaded all the required software/utilities before beginning.

You may also want to just go through the steps of getting into and out of Clockwork Recovery... and the like..

Just a suggestion.

OK -
2. Download Nandroid Backup (where?)

A nandroid backup is what it is called when you use CWM to create a backup of your ROM, so there isn't anything to download. Flash the CWM .tar using Odin, then using ROM Manager, select 'backup current rom'

This creates a nandroid backup.

ok this is someting i have wanted to ask sice i started rooting. i know what a nandroid back up is, The Good Lord knows it has saved my butt on several occasions, but how the heck did they come up with the name "nandroid"? i realize this will help absolutely no one, but its been driving me crazy for a month now!!!!!

Definitely follow JaeKar's advice. Read a ton of the threads related to all your questions and download all the files needed to fix most all problems you could encounter before you do anything to your phone. The only thing I would add is: Don't use Google to find things for your phone, and if you do, triple check that it is for the Fascinate or you will have a very nice looking brick.

Guys... check dates on threads... this post is from 6 months ago

This would be great if ROM Manager worked with Fascinate. Meanwhile, we have to be pointed to ROMs that we can download and install the old school way.
