[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok so i ordered a new M8 and S5, I'll be keeping the M8 and giving the S5 to my Dad. I bought them both on dumbphone lines.

The M8 uses a nano Sim card so I'm guessing I will need to activate the phone under the Dumb phone account before transferring it over to the UDP line? I believe my current phone has a mico sim not a nano so I don't think I can just plug that one in.

You can just activate that phone online on your UDP line. Do it online, it will ask you for the phone's MEID and the SIM's number. Some people have had the problem that if you activate it on the dumbphone line first the dumphone line's number becomes attached to that SIM card and then when you go to try to activate the smartphone on your UDP line it says that number is being used by another phone and then you have to call Verizon to have them release that SIM from that number in order to activate it on your UDP line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

New guy here and looking to ditch the iphone and go android. Here's my problem, I have an iphone 4 with verizon's UDP and it's my only line. I was looking to switch my wife to verizon as well. Any chance I could upgrade my phone without buying outright and keep my udp and add a line to my account so she could get one as well (taking advantage of the buy one get one)? Thanks

Add a new line and phone to your account and get a subsidized smartphone, It will be measured data. Transfer your upgrade to this new line and order a new smartphone. When you get that new smartphone activate it on your UDP line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Interesting. I always thought you had to activate the phones on the lines they were ordered, before doing the swaps. Can we confirm this? Thanks.

That has been the method posted by the original poster but other forums I've seen it isn't necessary and in my personal experience it isn't necessary. Actually activating it on the basic phone line first on the basic line sometimes causes the SIM to become associated with the basic phone's # and you can't activate it on the UDP line. You have to call Verizon to ask them to release the number first in order to activate it on the UDP line.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Are you sure it will fit Epacy? I've tried to search for what size SIM the S5 uses and I have been finding all sorts of different answers, most of them between micro and nano. Does anybody here have an S5 that can confirm is a regular SIM from the Gnex can fit into the S5? thanks =]

Just got my S5 and Verizon Galaxy Nexus SIM fits perfectly. Boot up phone and it says SIM already activated. All good to go! Plan just rolled over on the 12th and data still says unlimited.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The only problem with activating it directly onto the UDP line is that it seems like Verizon locks your account temporarily until your order is complete (i.e. it expects you to activate the phone on the line you ordered it on) Right now my online account won't let me activate/manage 2 of my lines (the lines the upgrades originally came from before transferring to the 2 dumblines) but it seems like I should expect that to drop off sooner or later. All 4 of my phones work right now..

My process:
4 lines, 2 smartphones with UDP, 2 dumbphones
transferred upgrades so both dumbphones upgraded with BOGO S5s.

Both smartphones lines had SIM cards from the S3, though my wife, due to a screen breakage, was using an S1 at the time. I put my S3 SIM in and it activated instantly and fine. Hers didn't because I was going 3G->4G, but I was able to activate that one via the internet and an activation code sent to my other line.

Confirmed the next day that both dumbphones were both working just fine. I can't manipulate plans or lines on the two lines the upgrades originated from, but the billing and data plans are all correct.

I only did one line at a time so perhaps it is different. I have 4 smartphone lines 1-4 and a dumphone line 5. Transferred upgrade from line 1 to line 5 and ordered a Note 3 and showed a pending activation on line 5. Went through the with activation online of the new Note 3 on line 2 but in the end it just told me to take the SIM from phone on line 2 into the new Note 3. Did that and was fine, unlimited preserved. Activation on dumb phone line eventually fell off. I probably didn't even have to go through the online activation and could have just put the SIM from line 2 into the new phone.

Thanks for the reply. Can you add a line to a single line plan?

I haven't done it it a while and I'm maxed out at 5 lines. I've seen posts say people have been able to, others say they couldn't. Maybe it depends on the existing plan. You could try to go through the process part way online and see if it will allow it without actually finalizing it to see if it will allow you with your plan. Some posts I've read said the rep in the Verizon store said they couldn't. I'm suspicious that the reps in the store get a commission for every unlimited data plan they change and may be making things up to get you to lose your unlimited.

I did some pre planning. I ordered 2 nano sim cards from Amazon. I purchased from Amazon because Verizon refused to send the sim cards without me giving them the phones they should be assigned.

I was going to activate the phones on the non unlimited lines, then move them to the unlimited lines using the purchased sim cards. I hope it works.

Thats awesome! I should get my S5 either between Fri-Mon. I'll post up my results. Quick question, when you activated the phone did you call or do it online?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

In my experience..... You can just take the phone to a corporate store and get a sim card.... I did with mine I purchased on swappa. Had a micro needed a mini.

They guy even said oh you are preserving your unlimited then looked at my account and saw like 10 gb on a half month and said oh.... Ok. Didn't even try and get me to change.

Neither. As I posted it automatically came up and said it was activated. Didn't have to do anything.

Yes, there seems to be wide variability on Verizon rep's aggressiveness at trying to take your unlimited data. That's why I think it's not a company-wide policy but a commission thing and it's up to the rep whether they want to be hard nosed and say misleading things to make you change your unlimited then others with more integrity don't want to screw up your unlimited for a commission.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Question--I have two UDP lines on the account, one of which has an upgrade available (Line A, Galaxy Nexus). I want to upgrade the phone on the one that isn't eligible (Line B, GSIII). Here is the plan--will this work?

Purchase M8 through best buy on the line that is eligible. (Line A)
Activate M8 using Gnex sim.
Transfer M8 to Line B by cutting/sticking the sim from the GSIII
Activate GSIII from Line B on Line A by requested a new sim from vzw.

Thoughts?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hmm. Having some trouble. I'm trying to get 2 phone through BOGO. I transferred an upgrade from an unlimited line to a tiered line. I then went to add a line to get the second phone. As I proceed to the data plan step, I am told I cannot keep my unlimited. I've tried several times without success. Any suggestions?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

If i transfer through Best Buy's upgrade eligibility transfer from one UDP line to another UDP line, is there a chance I'll lose my UDP on one of the lines? I wouldn't think it would be an issue... Has anybody successfully done this?

It says you can't keep it but if you look you see that unlimited is am available choice. Choose that

So worst case I will have to call verizon then?

I actually canceled my order since I can't get the VERIZON40 promo code to work on BOGO like others have been able to. (no place to enter it on their preorder site) and the deal is not going through correctly on the retail site (forces you into verizon edge).
