[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm sure it's in the thread somewhere I probably just missed it, I am looking for the new steps for a family plan with 2 unlimited lines and upgrades coming in august not sure if I need to wait since I will have to add a line anyway. Last I heard is that I would just:

- add a line and get the new GS4 or whatever new smartphone
- and then activate it on that line
- then activate a non smartphone on the new line
- then I can activate the new phone on the unlimited line

Has this process changed and is there any time lengths that need to be meet as far as leaving the phone activated on the new line for a certain amount of time?

That's pretty much it. Good luck!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So, quick question then... I understand the method and it sounds perfect for my situation but it makes me a little uneasy when you consider how transferring upgrades work.

I have 3 lines on my family share. 2 unlimited and 1 with double data (4GB for $30/m).

What if the two unlimited lines had upgrades available? My gut reaction is to transfer them to the 4GB plan and upgrade to another 4G phone using this method. But how do you handle multiple upgrade transfers? Can I just transfer one right after the other and keep renewing the 4GB plan each time? It doesn't make sense to me because this would mean we'd be getting two phones while renewing one line's contract to a total of two years instead of four years across two lines... It just FEELS like Verizon would have a rule against doing multiple of these transfers onto the same line one after the other...

That's pretty much exactly the method and exactly the result. As of right now they won't stop it from happening. There have been rumors that this might change, but if you're willing to have a 4 year contract, they're willing to take your money for 4 years.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Does anyone know max lines you can have on the old family share plans? 5? Thanks

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey all. First off, I want to thank everyone for the help and advice that has been provided. I jumped the gun and transferred my upgrade ( my line has unlimited data) to my mother's line (basic phone) and pre-ordered the Galaxy S4. I processed the transaction and jumped back into the "Upgrade Device" tab on the Verizon Wireless webpage. My line has an attachment along the lines of "Device needs to be activated (Activate when you receive device). I did everything right because I did transfer the upgrade to my mother's line (double checked the checkout page and confirmed that my mother's phone number was the one being upgraded). Am I good to go? Or did I make a mistake? Thanks in advance!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Could somone clarify whether there's a way to upgrade at a subsidized price and maintain unlimited data given my current situation: 700 shared min plan w/ 2 smartphones (one w/ unlimited and upgrade eligible; the other on 2GB plan -- formerly was unlimited but upgraded in Dec)? Is it possible to transfer my the unlimited data plan line's upgrade to the second line that currently has 2GB, do the upgrade there on the 2GB line so it doesn't cause the unlimited line to change plans, then transfer the new phone back to the unlimited line? When I go to the "Upgrade Device" page on My Verizon, I don't see an option to transfer my upgrade between lines (under the unlimited line it says "Upgrade at a discount" and under the 2GB line it says "Upgrade at full price").

I have seen a few people say the same thing, just make sure you don't activate it on your unlimited line first! Activate it to your mother's line first and you should be ok.

Not trying to sound like an a$$ but have you read any of this thread? That's is am this thread is about and it has been stated a 100 times how to do it. I'm not looking at the screen right now but you transfer the upgrade before you go to the upgrade page. But of you have a store close by its even easier to do it in the store, and come tomorrow any phone you want we be at the store. Just tell them you want to transfer line A to line B and they will be happy to do it.

I read several pages, the problem is there's a lot of mixed info and different cases such as upgrading with a smarthphone & a basic line, upgrading by adding a new line, etc.. I was expecting to see a transfer upgrade option on the page based on several posts (i.e. post 550 says, " 2. Selected dumb phone line, clicked Transfer Upgrade within it, Transferred upgrade from an unlimited line that was eligible for upgrade" however my experience isn't matching that). I'm also unclear whether this is even possible because the majority of the folks doing it seem to be using a "basic line" to do the upgrade, not another smartphone line with limited data.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a few questions that I need some clarification with to ensure get this process correct.

1) Do I need to do this process online? I am very anxious to get the Nokia Lumia 928 asap so I would rather not have to order it online and wait for it to ship. Based on previous posts in this forum it seems like almost everyone who does it does it online, is there a reason for this? Are employees angry/ not supportive when people come in to do this loop whole?

2) Do I need to have physical possession of the basic phone that I am using the subsidized upgrade on? The phone is someones on my family plan that is not in the same state as me so I wouldn't have physical possession of the basic phone. This means that if I were hypothetically able to go do the process in the store, would I also need to bring the basic phone with me?

3) How can I get a sim card without paying, or do I even need a sim card? I am really confused on the whole sim card situation and don't understand what switching of sim cards needs to occur. I have a Droid Incredible OG so I don't have a sim card to switch to the Lumia 928 when I get it, so how will this work? Do I need to buy a new one? Or will I be able to use the sim card that comes in the 928? Will the sim card that comes in the 928 be linked to the phone number of the basic line?

4) If I can indeed do this process in a store, do I need to go to a Corporate Store?

Thank you guys in advance, you are an extremely knowledgeable group of people so thanks for helping :)

Line A = unlimited
Line B = limited

Step 1
Go to the store and tell them you want to switch the upgrade from line A to line B and get the phone you want.

Step 2
When you get home get online and activate the old phone from line B back to line B. One that is done the new phone is free to activate onto line A. Do so, you do not need a new SIM card.

Step 3
Enjoy!

I hope this helps.

That does help, thanks! I was getting hung up on whether this could be done with two smartphone lines as most examples used a doner "basic line"; I'm glad to hear it's that simple! While I actually do like my Thunderbolt, I'm very much looking forward to a new phone. Oh how I miss the good old days when customers on high value plans could upgrade after 12 months...

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Do I need to do this process online?

You can do the entirety of the process online, over the phone or in a store.

Do I need to have physical possession of the basic phone that I am using the subsidized upgrade on?

It's easier if you do; the fastest way to activate a phone on a line is by inserting the SIM associated with that line. With a basic phone, they do not always have SIM cards, and so it can get slightly weird. If getting possession of the phone is not a reasonable option, then, so long as the phone is active now, I'd handle that part over the phone, as customer service will have the information needed for that phone.

How can I get a sim card without paying, or do I even need a sim card?

SIM cards can be obtained by going to the store or by ordering one from customer service. I've seen conflicting reports on whether or not there is a charge, but I've personally never been charged for one.

If I can indeed do this process in a store, do I need to go to a Corporate Store?

That's always the best bet as they're most closely aligned with the systems necessary to make corrections, but as has been reiterated throughout this post, they tend to be less than ideally equipped with knowledge and in my opinion, it's best to read this thread and get a solid handle on the online process and do the entire thing yourself. With a little knowledge from people like androidluvr, tx_tuff and dpham00, you'll be better armed than they are and should only need Verizon's assistance in a minimal capacity.

Good luck!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

My local Verizon Wireless corporate store just hands them out for free, as long as you give them your Verizon phone number. I have three spare ones. They don't even enter it into the computer. I just take the 4G LTE card home and enter the number on Verizon's website.... pretty easy process.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Can someone guide me how to add a second line? I tried online to add a second line and it gave me the option to only select the share everything plan. From reading this thread, that is not the plan I want to select right? I have one line now with unlimited data with 1000 text and 300 minutes. TIA

It needs to be converted to a family Nationwide Share plan. If that option doesn't exist online, you might have to do that part over the phone. Under no circumstances is changing to a share everything plan okay!
