[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks. The sim in line 1 is outdated for the new smartphone I want to purchase. So they have different sims.
No matter what, I need to switch sims?

Just get a new SIM. There is no problem getting one. You are allowed to put any 4G LTE phone you want to on any line you want to. They can't interfere with that by the terms of their FCC licenses. No one will question you. Just tell them I want to put this phone on this line, I need a new SIM, please give me one, thanks.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

DayThyme, thanks. I sent you a pm, not sure if you got it. I'll post my question here.

If you could, please let me know if the below makes sense, and is in proper order.
Again I appreciate all of your help!

*The new purchased phone will come with a different sim card as my line 1 is outdated, however line 2 which is my wife's has the same sim card as the new purchased phone* (I want the new phone and keep unlimited data.)

line 1(me) has unlimited data (upgrade eligible)
line 2(wife) has 2gb (not upgrade eligible)

use verizonwirless.com to:
transfer upgrade from line 1 (unlimited) to line 2 wife (2 gb data).
upgrade line 2
activate new phone on line 2

log into Verizon and go to the switch device option for line 2. Click "yes" to switch to a device that was previously on my account.

"Then take the SIM card that is in the phone originally on line 1 and put it in the new smartphone and you are good to go." <---I can't do this because line 1 has a different sim card than the new phone.

so then i would?:

take the sim card out of the new phone that is activated on line 2 (wife's), and put it in the original line 2's phone. (since the sim cards both match)

then i will need to get a new sim card for the new phone and put it in the new phone and it will have line 1's unlimited data?

yes, but then you shouldn't have to switch the device on verizon. simply switch the SIM card from the new phone and your wife's original phone. That will put her original phone back on her line.

then i will need to get a new sim card for the new phone and put it in the new phone and it will have line 1's unlimited data?
yes, get a new sim card for the new phone for your line 1's number.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Not trying to be mean here, but this is simple reading comprehension. No law degree required.

Lol fine print is usually written in a confusing manner for a reason. So which one does it apply to then? "Carrier" or "line" or "carrier line"?

And the bolded is also what I was asking about. Am I breaking their agreement if the phone is still on a smartphone line? Considering you were asking questions that are kinda common sense just a couple posts above mine, I don't think you're in a position to be belittling my questions.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I currently have a galaxy nexus (micro sim) and I just purchased a moto x from the moto maker cyber deal today (nano sim) full retail in order to keep unlimited data and I only have one line. I can't seem to find a clear answer and I apologize if this has been answered but here's my question. What is the easiest and safest way to activate the nano sim without losing unlimited data? Online, in-store or by phone? I keep finding conflicting answers. Thanks in advance.

You bought the moto X off contract so you can activate it on the unlimited data line without losing unlimited data. It is only the subsidized phones where you use an upgrade and it extends your contract that you have to worry about losing unlimited data.

It is not confusing at all. If you activate a subsidized phone on a different line than the one you upgraded on, move the subsidized phone off of the line you upgraded on or downgrade the data plan on that line within 181 days after buying from Amazon you WILL be charged the secondary ETF of $400. No ifs, ands or buts about it.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

First -- Thank you all!! Reading through these threads have been a nightmare, BUT -- I still have my unlimited plan. On a side note -- the process made sense right away, but reading every scenario was frustrating because it started confusing me. Long story short, it was worth it. I have Family Share 700; two lines, both eligible for upgrade, one smart #1 (unlimited) and one basic #2. Here's my scenario, hope it's helpful:

1) Ordered GS4 on-line. (Comcast had a $200 prepaid visa offer on a $199 phone. Initiated online via Comcast, which took me to VZW where I upgraded the basic, #2.)
2) Received the GS4, (with new SIM) activated on the basic line, no problem.
3) Transferred the GS4 from the basic. (Select manage device (basic), Activate or switch, continued through prompts, activated using *228 and basic was back -- GS4 was free.)
4) Now, Activate or switch on the old smart phone #1. Activate device previously used...selected my old smart phone, #1 from drop down, continued through prompts, (make sure Unlimited is highlighted in blue) and confirm. The GS4 was activated with the unlimited plan, life is beautiful!

Couple footnotes:
1) Write down the SIM card #. When activating old smart phone (item 4 above) it prompted me to add new SIM card (which was in the phone) or SIM card #, that I had written down. One of the posters suggested this which was very helpful.
2) Don't use *228 to activate the old smart phone, just power off and on. This last piece made me nervous, as it took about 15min to complete.

Once again, thank you all!!!

does Best Buy charge and ETF if you deactivate a phone that you upgraded?

Thank you for your effort in detailing your process, but I fear it might add to further confusion. For example, why are you activating or switching on your old smartphone? (step #4) First, it already is activated and #2 I don't believe it being on or off has any import. Now if what you mean is that your GS4 is taking the place of the "old smartphone" then yes, you might be on to something. For a visual representation on what to do I found this:

Do I just log into Verizon and activate sim? Thanks

I have never activated an off contract phone, but I will be doing so as soon as my Moto X gets here. I would imagine all you do is log in, hit activate or switch phones and then type in the SIM card to activate it on your line. Call Verizon if you have any questions.

With an off-contract phone, all you need to do is request a sim card. You can do this on the phone, or go into a store, and tell them you need a new sim card. Corp stores will give you the card for free, but they will want to activate it on the replacement phone.

I have gone into the store numerous times to get a new sim card for phones I have purchased used, or to switch one phone from one account to another. No problems with my unlimited lines.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I've read the iPhone guide above but still confused as hell. Could someone please explain what I specifically need to do to keep my unlimited data in my situation?

My girlfriend and I have the 1400min nationwide talk&text plan with unlimited data on both of our phones, comes out to $175 a month for our plan. We both have upgrades available too. Currently I have an HTC Rezound and she has an ancient Droid X2.

I'd like to upgrade to an iPhone 5s and she to a 5c. How do I go about doing this, getting the iPhone's at the upgrade price while keeping unlimited?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You will have to get a dumb phone (ebay) and add a line to your account. Then you will have 3 lines available to upgrade. Do you have both phones on the same account?

As Clint said above, you have to add a line to your account and switch the iPhone you get with the new line to a basic phone after you activate the new iPhone on the new line.

So you will need to add a new line at the cost of anywhere from $12-18 per month depending on where you live + the activation fee. But since you will then have 3 subsidized phones after you do the transfers, you can sell one of them to recoup the cost. I would get 2 iPhone 5s and 1 iPhone 5c and sell one of the iPhone 5s.

There is no way for both lines to keep unlimited data without adding a new line. Alternatively, you could cancel the new line within 3 days after transferring the other 2 upgrades and pay the $350 ETF. You should be able to recoup your $550 by selling the iPhone 5s that you bought with the added line and you would still have your new iPhones because you cancel AFTER you get those but before 3 days.

Why do I need to purchase an extra iPhone 5s. I have a Droid Incredible laying around cant I use that as a dummy phone? Also my father needs a cell, hes old and would be fine with a cheap phone. And wouldnt I need to add 2 lines since I have two phones? This is where I'm getting confused? Couldn't I just add my father to out plan and that would allow us to keep unlimited?
