Insurance

See FAQ attached. Existing lines can't add protection to unlocked phones.
I think you can, but have to take it to store to be inspected and cleared as being in good working order (which is true even for their own phones if you didn't add it within the grace period after the initial purchase).

What is everyone doing about insurance for your new phone? I bought directly from Samsung but declined their insurance. It is stupid expensive from Verizon. Do you insure or take your chances?

Check your credit card. Some credit cards offer protection for your purchases up to a lifetime maximum.

So I read the fine details of the Verizon Total Mobile Protection Multi-Device I have on my account and it seems like since I purchased the phone from Samsung and activating it on an existing line, it isn't covered. Well, crap. Also, to think about the months of paying $45 a month when I've never filed a claim, I'm already $$$ behind and probably paid well more than a total phone replacement purchase.

Now I'm considering dropping the Verizon protection on the other 4 lines on my account and just picking up SquareTrade or something for just the S20+ instead. The other 4 phones (wife and kids) are all older apple models and I'm sure I'm bleeding money with the insurance I already have.

Of course, I'll drop the protection and that's when my 14 year old will lose her phone...

You can always downgrade and leave her with protection. It's a good thing yiu haven't had to make a claim on your device and find out that you don't truly have protection.

I just had a thought. Even though I purchased through Samsung, I'm using the Verizon financing and payments. I wonder if this will allow my phone to still be included on my insurance plan. I'll have a chat with Verizon once the support chat opens.

Well, with both our Pixel 3's we carry insurance through Asurion. And not just phones, we have done that with many items from Amazon. And when my Fire HD10 stopped working they just sent me a new one.
It's insurance. Like Social Security, not everyone will collect, but when you need it...it pays.
All told you will wind up spending about 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of your phone (purchase and deductible) but that is still a saving when I drop my phone from a ladder three stories up.

If you don't spend a couple of week's salary on a phone, you don't need to insure it. Go cheap and don't worry about it. Last phone I got from VZ cost me $0.

Personally I usually get insurance for maybe the first like few months until I get used to the phone. I usually get the $6 insurance through Verizon and even though I'm going to be using the phone on Verizon it's an unlocked model which means it probably won't be covered so I'll have to look for insurance elsewhere

Yea I skip insurance because you wind up having to pay a big deductible and get a refurbished phone and not even a new one. When my S7 got replaced I did the math and with the extra I was paying monthly + the deductible + the fact I got a refurbished phone that had more issues than the one it replaced not to mention newer devices where released I'd be better just paying for a brand new device out of pocket with all the extra monthly payment and deductible.
