I'm chatting with someone right now who says that the whole Merge delay was to give Sprint a foothold in the CDMA space with the Shift 4G, which has the same specs and form factor.

I can't name names, and even if I could I wouldn't, but it's someone I trust enough to bring this up for discussion.

So discuss!

Wow... first? Lollolololololol

Makes sense, the G2 came out late last year so I think the Shift 4g was delayed to let the G2 gain some success, it's been about 4 months or so, now I guess they are coming out with it and the new Sprint WP7 slider.

But why would they do that for sprint so that the Shift can get a foothold? I mean whats in it for HTC? Why would they care? I mean why should it matter if they sell shifts or Merges? Profit Margins are greater on the Shift?

I'm with you. It's not like anyone will be switching carriers over the shift/merge. With dual core phones available, these are now mid-range phones.

Nice theory, but I think, if true, they totally destroyed the market for the Merge in the process. With all the upcoming phones, the Merge really lost a considerable amount of market share and will no more than a mid-range device when released. I think overall it would have been better (considering total sales from both devices) to have released the Merge back in November.

For the fact that a lot of people don't care about dual core I think the merge is going to do great as a mid range android phone

I personally don't care about dual core. I think the delay killed some of the hype but I still think it will do well. I don't think your average consumer cares about dual core.

I have a Droid Inc and the phone literally responds instantly to anything I ask of it. And there are even newer single core phones on the market now. We don't need faster right now really in my opinion, we need better battery life which is why the Merge/Shift/G2 is attractive being fast but only running at 800Mhz.

Lucky. I can't say that about my OG Droid. I would like to give HTC a chance this time around. The merge would be a worthy replacement but by the time I'm due for an upgrade (Sept) it'll be too far behind the curve. Maybe Merge 2?

if you're waiting for a part two, you might have to go for the Desire Z 2 since the Merge 2 will probably appear the same time next year as this year...
