IOS vs Android vs Windows 8 on tablets?

Or yourself. In what world do you think mass consumers care about weight? Some do, sure. But for the majority the average laptop weight falls in between 4-5+lbs. If they want lighter, there are ultra books and macbook airs, what niche does the Surface fill beside being a device for the future than something consumers will buy now.

The world where mass consumers care about weight is the same one where they care about size, aesthetics, performance and cost.

Which are all factors where multiple devices fill, so again what niche does the Surface fill that is useful to mass consumers now, or is it forever just niche device?

The Surface Pro line satisfies the needs of people who want laptop and tablet performance without owning two devices. To accomplish that, the device needs to be relatively light. That's why weight matters, despite your contention that 2 lbs vs. 4-5 lbs doesn't make a difference. I'm not sure why you are suggesting that a niche device has a negative connotation. Every groundbreaking device started as a niche device. In five years, these devices may pass consumption tablets in terms of popularity, they may disappear completely, or they may nestle in between laptops and minimal tablets. Neither you nor I know how it will play out.

Not with certainty but seeing the recent news about how much money Microsoft loses on the Surface line, that niche just may die out. There is no way anyone who is a large stockholder will continue to allow Microsoft to continue writing down losses like that.

Right now it appears that Microsoft is pushing the Surface Pro 3 and pulling back on the Surface and a mini configuration. I don't see the whole line dying out anytime soon.

How van it survive when it isn't a hit with consumers? Unfortunately devices life and die by mass consumers nowadays and by all indications, Windows Tablets to Surface aren't doing well. I think more than anything though that has to do with the current mass perception of Microsoft.

The Surface Pro 3 is a new device with the i3 and i7 versions only becoming available in the last week. We can have the discussion of whether it is a hit with consumers in about 6-12 months.

If a company isn't boasting about how many it sold/shipped when it has been available for a week, then you know initial uptake was weak. If by next quarter they are still mum on numbers then you will know there was little demand for it.

Never have I ever not seen a company boast about devices that are hits. OnePlus One, iPhones, Samsung, HTC, LG, hell even BlackBerry last year with the Z10 launch they always mention if something sold reasonably well in the first week or so.

That's exactly what Amy Hood did a couple weeks ago with respect to the SP3. She didn't release numbers but she certainly boasted about sales outpacing earlier models.

That is good. Here's hoping that they actually make some profit off of then then.

First of all I have never used an Ipad and doubt I ever will. Mac products do nothing for me.

I have had several Android tablets are the years but I am currently using a Windows 8.1 Pro tablet.

I had a Windows RT tablet (Asus Vivotab RT) which was a good option but the problem I had with
it was the speed. It was painfully slow.

I had been looking at getting a Surface Pro or a Surface Pro 2 when an opportunity on E-bay presented
me with an Asus B121 tablet in excellent shape for a sliver under $200.00.

It came with Windows 7 but I already had a couple of Windows 8 upgrade licenses I purchased for next to nothing last year and I installed that on my tablet. Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit.

The B121 has an i5 1.33Ghz processor/4GB DDR3-800 and a 64GB SSD. It's a fast little bugger.
Yeah, it has a 12.1 inch screen but for my use that is just fine for me.

I am usually using it in coffee shops or at work in the break room. I love the tablet.

I have heard someone said in another forum the user thinks the Ipad and Android tablets will die in the next 5 years because of Windows 8 tablets as it is a real full OS on a tablet.

But i don't think so because i really think Ipads and Android tablets are going to around for a long time despite a big threat of Windows 8 tablets.

Just wondering what is the best tablet OS between IOS or Android of Windows 8

And do you think Ipads and Android tablets will be around in the next 5/10 years despite of Windows 8 tablets?

Very interesting questions. I think, all three platforms will co-exist. All have different advantages and cases where they are best. All three companies behind them have a lot of money and can keep them in the market. Personally, I prefer Windows 8, as it's the only OS you can really work (run anything, yes also the Mac OS, although not legally, but you can); and you can play and use apps. The app gap is closing rapidly - and I like the design (but that's obviously my personal opinion).

I take my SP everywhere in my messenger bag because it is so small and lightweight. I can't say the same for larger devices. A two-pound device is drastically different than a five-pound device. I think the lighter third-party WinTabs that run full Windows will become more popular because of the price point, but we shall see.

I use have to bring my laptop bag with my 15 inch laptop inside on holidays but now i have my Windows 8 tablet 11 inch Acer Iconia W700 and i put it in my bag for holidays because as you already said it is so small and lightwieght and i don't have to bring my laptop bag anymore and leave my laptop at home.

It is so much better! :D

And i all so take my Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 on holidays and prefer to use it in the car because my Acer Iconia W700 is to big and cumbersome because it is a 11.6 inch tablet.
