IP53 rating a bit dissapointing

It seems the Pixel now has one of the lowest ratings currently out right now at IP53 at this price point. S7s come in at IP68 and iPhones at IP67. The only other "flagship" phone I found with such a low rating so far has conveniently been the HTC 10.

My Pixel is ordered and I am still eager to see what it offers but hope dust under the screen is not one of the features. :-)

It should at least protect against rainfall though. That is better than most other phones, many flagships included.

Not really. It is rated against slight water. So if it is sprinkling outside sure but not any real rain. Ip53 isn't much better than not rated at all. Either way keep your phone safe from water and dust. I bet next year it will have higher certification though.

Exactly.

Not that I'd be inclined to pay that kind of money for a device purposely designed for a two-year lifespan, in the first place, but, I'd never even consider paying that kind of money for a device that, if accidentally caught in the wash from an overturned glass of liquid whilst sitting on a table, or whatever, would be instantly destroyed. And, with an IP53 rating, it would take a good deal less than that.

I found this: IP Ratings Explained :: Jackson Industries

It illustrates (I'll admit kind of poorly) what the different ratings can mean.

Wiki indicates that water falling as a spray from vertical to 60 degrees indicates rainfall

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code

So it is possible that it is protected from rain. Splashes, no, and that is unfortunate. But there are still a number of devices that aren't protected from that either.

IP67 vs IP68: Waterproof IP ratings explained

They break down the ratings a little bit too. All this is under lab conditions so there is always the possibility that these devices will fail in a given situation. But still, something is better than nothing.

Even the phones that are certified ip68 have disclaimers... Get it wet and bye-bye warranty.. So while certified, they don't and won't stand behind it..

You guys are funny man. I'm sure it will be fine in rain. What do you plan on walking around in the rain getting soaked just because your phone is waterproof? Lmao . Quick walk to the car will be fine. The phone isn't even out to know just how waterproof it is.

A rating of IP53 is still better than having no IP rating, IMO.

At least you still get some assurance that the phone should be fine against accidental spills.

Which leads me to this. Please don't go all reckless with your phone just because it has an IP rating. It's a peace-of-mind thing, not a license to be reckless.

That's so people don't go looking for trouble. People do crazy stuff like watch YouTube in a bowl full of water just because they "can" lol

Yeah AND have we not already been using phones for decades that were not ip68? I dunno, I get it that some want it or even require it and if that's the case then this is not the phone for them, Maybe instead of posting negativity about it over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, they'd be better served researching a phone that meets their needs... There have been 4 mainstream flagship phones rated IP67 or higher. In 2014 the Galaxy S5 IP67, the iPhone 7 is IP67 and the S7 and Note 7 are IP68. The HTC 10 and Pixel are both IP53. As far as I know, there aren't any mainstream flagships other than those 6 devices with any official IP rating at all.

And that's all I really care about. Not looking to go snorkeling with my phone, etc. I would just like the little extra protection for the short walk in the parlking lot at work that seems like a mile when it's raining...lol

Sony phones. Depending If you count them as main stream. Worldwide I would say they were .

Isn't that a novel idea!

Flame me if you want but my opinion is that many people tear down a new device simply because they don't have the means to get one. Makes them feel better.

I don't count them, though I understand that I should. I just feel like they go out of their way to not sell phones to me, so I go out of my way to forget they exist :p

Before wireless phones, had we not been using pay phones for decades? What did we need cell phones for, then?

How many times have you read, in one of these forums, things like "I accidentally dropped my phone in...", "I forgot I had my phone in my pocket and went in the water," "I accidentally put my phone in the wash" (my wife did that, btw), "My phone was sitting on the table and somebody knocked over...?" It happens. That's life.

For a device costing what these things cost, again, never mind the built-in obsolescence, not to have even marginal protection against the normal trials and tribulations such a device is likely to encounter is, to me, simply unacceptable. Watching people make excuses for it is astonishing.

Watching people throw online tantrums about it is what's astonishing.. :p

Your course is clear... The Pixel is not for you! Maybe browse some of the other phone sub-sections to find one that meets your needs? I hear AC has plenty of sub-forums for other phones.. :D

The Pixel does have marginal protection, but I think you're mischaracterizing the market. As indicated before, there are very few devices that have any sort of certified protection and this is one of them. Could it have been better? Absolutely. But it already is better than what most phones are providing.
