IPad Mini(or Nano) vs. NEXUS7...........stay loyal to android or switch?

What's with this loyalty thing? Does a carpenter have only one saw or one drill bit or one router bit? Let's see...between me and my wife, we have tablets running HP Web OS and Cyanogen mod (dual boot Touchpad hooked up to the entertainment system for Internet radio), two iPads (I won mine), 1 Nexus 7, two iPhones (plus a work IPhone. I preferred my old BlackBerry for work), an iMac, 2 Windows 7 machines (1 a laptop dual booting to Linux Mint), 1 Windows 8 laptop, a Ubuntu Linux server, a VMWare server running instances of Centos, Debian, & ClearOS Linux etc. Not to mention other Linux and *BSD machines running in virtualization for testing. And a hacked AppleTV.

I love my N7 for the obvious reasons of hackability, customisation and being the perfect size and weight for reading ebooks (we have Kindles that are now gathering dust for the most part, but can't be beat for outdoor reading and long battery life) and for casual media consumption. The retina displays on the iPads are stunning. I hate the walled-garden of the Apple ecosystem, but my wife loves the Mac because SHE CAN JUST GET THINGS DONE. I like my iPad as it's the perfect device for reading .pdf's.

Bottom line, use the best tool for the task. Don't get caught up in dogmatic and polarized A vs B, "your way sucks" fights. Enjoy what each Operating System brings to the table, because each was written by people with a passion for their platform, and their passion shines through in the capabilities and user experience that you get to play with. Life is too short to get caught up in silly turf wars. Leave that for the soccer fans! :-)

Oh yeah well you're wrong! You MUST pick a side or bad things will happen!

Or how does he shut off the part of the brain that wants choice and more utility from a device? :-)

"Choice" is relative. I bought an iPad for my sweetie, to work with her Apple TV (2), MacBook Pro, iPhone (4S). She can watch Amazon Prime videos on it, control her Apple TV with hit, Airplay, all that crap. Heck, her streaming videos choices are better on that thing than on my Android device. But I'm not an Apple user, I've got Linux and Android around me.

AstronomerXI is making a quite valid choice. I guess this topic is slanted to the "Stay loyal, or betray the cult and buy Apple." Pfft. Buy what you want and what you will be happy using.

Or how does he shut off the part of the brain that wants choice and more utility from a device? :-)

This loyalty nonsense is so ridiculous. Unless you work at Apple or Google, or have some dog in this fight who cares. Im gonna use whatever works best for me, and I like both. Until Google or Apple start paying ME, Im not being loyal to any company. Really, some Android advocates or no better than the irrational Apple advocates who refuse to escape the RDF.

FWIW, if the iPad mini is basically a scaled down Ipad 3 with a nice display (i.e. nicer than the N7 at least) and is $299-350 Im definitely getting one. I really like my N7. Love the GPS, really like Tegra3 games etc. I think the 7" form factor is much better than the Ipad one, frankly think Apple should have gone 7" since day one and think the success of the N7 and Fire are the main reasons Apple is releasing a smaller Ipad.

But its clear Google/Asus cut some corners to keep the price low (no back camera, awful front camera, weak speaker) and for me the lack of good audio/music apps (seriously Android has got nothing over iOS in that area, the music apps are pitiful.), the high latency audio, and the very lackluster Google Music are some of the reasons Im getting a mini if the price is right.

I feel between Google Play and the Amazon MP3 store I can match most of what Apple has to offer at least for me...I do wish I could rent Archer season 1 but otherwise I find enough...

Not sure I can justify another tablet, at least for now. :) My tablets are very integrated into my work, hobbies, and relaxation. I use apps for astronomy and public outreach in science, for navigation, for plane spotting, for reading for work and pleasure, for listening to music and podcasts, for reference, casual gaming, communication, creating diagrams, sketching out ideas, making notes etc etc.

I'm about to be in the same boat. Got my first smartphone (4s) earlier this year, mainly for the integration with my macbook, but I never really wanted an iPad. The nexus 7 was the first tablet to make me actually want a tablet. The fact that I can plug my usb snes controller in and play classic games without any hacks, actually access the file system, customize, hold it in one hand, don't have to worry about the pretty, shiny back getting scratched-up, use it as a comfortable reader for school, it runs chrome natively...I could go on, but I think most of you get the point.

I have an iPhone. I have a Nexus 7. I am no fanboi of either. I buy what I like and what I think will be the best bang for my buck for my intended usage.

I like the simplicity of iOS but hate the walled-in garden that's just too suffocating for me. I'm sick of having to Jailbreak my device that I paid a premium for just to get it to do simple things like other devices have been doing for a decade!

I chose a Nexus device because of its pure OS, no drama with updates and is highly customizable. The Nexus 7 is also one of the best tablets on the market and will still be even if/when an iPad Mini is released...

So unless Apple magically rips down the walled-in garden, I'm not switching to any iPad-- mini or not. Once this iPhone dies or I can get my hands on the next NEXUS unlocked GSM smartphone, Apple has lost a long time customer. I'm done with Apple for the foreseeable future. No more iShackles for me! I'm free! :D

I agree, though I'm holding out for the next nexus 7 offering. I have an iPhone, too, and will soon have a nexus 7, even if the iPad mini really happens and is as low as $300. I'm drawn more to the size/form of the nexus 7, for reading, gaming, videos, etc. I also like the fact that the back seems like it would age well without a case, and that it's cheap enough not to have to be paranoid about damaging it. This also seems like a good time to finally experience Android. I'll always be a macbook user, though. (as long as they still make a model I can change HDD/RAM/Optical on.)

Hmm if I recall correctly Steve jobs said it was stupid to make a 7 inch tablet and that a 10 was the perfect size. The only reason apple ever got in that market was due to the nexus 7, they had no concern with it when it was just the nook and kindle.

Steve Jobs said many things. He also was receptive to the idea of a smaller tablet. The main reason Apple appaarently is getting into the socalled 7" market is because envisioned sales to educational markets and business markets as well as to the general consumer would not only generate hardware sales revenue but protect their growing markets in educational media and other Apple store products. The Apple mini is reported to be 7.85" with 4 to 3 aspect ratio and thus about 40℅ more screen area than the N7. It will thus give a different viewing experience.

That's the one thing he was right about - 10" IS the perfect size for a tablet.

If the nexus 7 was that size I'd have bought it.

I like full size tablets, none of those 7"mini tabs

It's stupid until they decide to do it.

Looking back, I'm sure Apple had a 7 inch iPad in development for quite some time. I doubt the only reason Apple is potentially releasing a smaller iPad is because of the Nexus 7.

The problem with iPad is that yes it has the best apps for a tablet but then when you go back to the home screen, 2007 smacks you in the face real hard.

Get the transformer infinity then. Asus keeps it about 99% stock Android it has a beautiful screen and is super fast. I took mine back and kept my Nexus 7 because it was too big for my needs though.

I'm only loyal once I've invested something in it. I've spent real money on apps between the N7 and my phone. Plus I'm already using a lot of other google services (like gmail) and they integrate better with Android than iOS. The same goes for my kindle. I've invested so much in books on Amazon, and I can use it's Android app in a pinch, that it makes it useless to purchase a book through Google when I get better functionality and price with the kindle. So I guess you could say I'm loyal to my money, not necessarily the brand.

MP3s are an entirely different animal. I've spent more money at Amazon, but I would buy anywhere else if their prices were better. Since Amazon continues to price match and beat prices there's never been a reason to switch. And for a phone or device like the N7, Google Play (which I'm still uploading music to), Amazon MP3 and the speakers they have serve me just fine. The quality through headphones at the lower end depends more on the headphones anyway. For my primary music listening experiences, I'll stick with my PMP.

Spot on.

Any content non-DRMed (or "a license that locks you into an ecosystem") has to be a factor for anyone thinking of moving between ecosystems.

With most people having an existing smartphone or tablet, the actual hardware becomes less and less important. If you've bought a ton of apps on Google Play, it probably wouldn't be wise to completely switch to iOS.

iOS is nothing more then a well designed prison. I personally do not want to go to prison so I will be avoiding the new iPad.
