Long story short iPhone died on me cuz I'm a cheapskate and did all the repairs myself. Well...attempted them haha. I'm getting a relatives old droid x on Monday. It's been awhile since I've tinkered with android and especially a droid x. Any issues or update I should be aware of? Thanks for your time and feedback everyone.

Welcome to the DX group.
How experienced would you say you are with an Android device such as the DX or Android in general? I dont want to get too technical with you just to have it go in one ear and out the other(you did just come from an iphone lol)
Let us know if your DX is given to you bone stock or someone has "played" with it, plus the questions above and we will go from there.

What I can say is that you have a DX that is still near the top of the chain when cared for properly and if possible "played" with once things are learned. Enjoy your new toy for now.

I used to have the OG Droid. Got really comfortable with rooting on that, but that was a long time ago. My most recent experience was with an htc thunderbolt last year. I had to do the command prompt or whatever way of rooting. I wasn't thrilled with it's battery life, so I went back to my iPhone. I've been on here for awhile and I've also followed droid-life while I had my android devices. Another one of my concerns is that it seems the android community is plagued with malware from apps and such. Is there a way to protect my phone from that? Other than not downloading obviously fake apps. I generally look into an app that you have to pay for before I throw down the cash for it, so I know it's legit. The DX hasn't been rooted before, but I'm not sure if they updated to the newest firmware which I believe will not allow me to root and get ICS on it...or is ICS available for DX? official or unofficial. Thanks for your help! Honestly, I didn't expect anything helpful from the android community from the few experiences I've had with forums...a lot of snarky, holier than thou people.

Just be careful what apps you download, look at the permissions tthey request and you'll be fine, I've never had an issue with malware myself. The newest update just came out and is not available for everyone yet, its not ICS just a bug fixer but you're right it hasn't been rooted yet. I'm sure that will be good to, there are some very easy 1click root methods out there. You're an Android owner now on an Android board, ask for help or advice and you shall receive it, this is a great board as is RootzWiki, the Android community is very helpful and extremely smart and good at tinkering with phones!

Also a couple ICS builds are available for the DX, custom ROM's, they are still being developed and bettered all the time, CM4DXGB is another GREAT ROM, that's what I use as my daily driver since I use my camera alot. I say try em all and see what you like the best!

What makes that ROM better for camera use?

The best security for any system is between the user's ears. That said, there are several antivirus/antitheft apps available including Lookout, Avast! and Kaspersky, among others.

If you're going to root it with Gingerbread, do so now, then install Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper before you get or accept the OTA update to .621. The current firmware has only been available for a couple of days, so unless the former owner pulled it, it's likely still on .602. There is not now and likely will never be a Google/Verizon official ICS for this phone, but there may be custom ROMs for it.

The nearest ICS were going to have is 1 of 2 ROMS
1. CM9 Beta - CyanogenMod 9 [UNOFFICIAL] [Beta] - RootzWiki (No camera that lets picture taking but options and settings are available
2. MIUI v4 Alpha aka MIUI ICS 4.0.3 which has no service bug - Should be in beta soon w working camera. No link as it's not wise to flash yet.

I am using Beanstown106's Galnet MIUI ICS ROM(http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12588-ne...tt-charge-while-off-updated-bootmenu-scripts/) which has "ICS framework" and working camera. I am on ver. 2.2.4(its currently at 2.2.5) and have been running it since it was born back in Nov 2011. Best ROM for me as a daily driver for a load of reasons.
Whenever it comes to ROM's, make sure you fully read and understand the OP's instructions and you wont go wrong.

For the DX, and this is just my .02, I would root it and get it to .602(.605 if you have a keyboard lag issue) and then shop ROMS and apps. For safety, Lookout has never failed me concerning safety yet as other users have said the safest way to use your device is to learn it and what can go into it.
Here is what I used to root, the easiest 1 click method I found - One-Click Root for Stock Gingerbread (Droid X, Droid 3, Droid X2, Cliq and Cliq 2) [From the Forums] | TalkAndroid.com
Learn your device read our forums, as well as Googling others, and when you're ready, as Nike would say
JUST DO IT!
We will always be here to help

What makes that ROM better for camera use?

The camera doesnt work on the CM9 builds. I use the camera alot, I read below before posting this MIUI has a working camera now. I'm not a big fan of MIUI though.

Ah. I was thinking that there was a difference in the camera software that makes one produce better pictures than the other, not that one doesn't support the camera at all.

Liberty 3 has the best camera...period!
