Is 2.1 supposed to fix handsfree bluetooth dialing?

Just for the records the iphone didn't have this for the longest time and the palm pre doesnt have this. The droid isn't alone.

Not that this helps since I really want it too but just wanted to point out that its not just the droid.

I have a Kenwood works fine

As a matter of fact, the Droid works fine in my wife's Ford Fusion Hybrid with Microsoft Sync.

Wise folk tell me this is because the "intelligence" is in the bluetooth device and that some high end bluetooth earphones can pull off the same trick.

I can't verify this as the voice the Droid voice dial uses is identical to the Sync's so when the Ford says "say a command" I don't know whether the car or phone is generating the response.

I happen to drive an old Suburban with an aftermarket Kenwood radio-DVD player-bluetooth device that can't deal with the Droid's interface and my investigation led me to the fact about that the garden variety bluetooth is not capable of initiating the voice dial capabilities of the Droid.

Cross your fingers and hope 2.1 will bring us Droid folk into the 21st century of car communications.

I own a Kenwood KVT719 DVD and bluetooth works fine check your Kenwood model on Kenwood site for updates, in fact Droid works better than my HTC Touch did.

I'm confused. Doesn't the Droid have Bluetooth? My curve (and my prior Verizon flip-phone) hooked up to my Prius via Bluetooth. Are you saying the Droid won't do that? This would be a huge factor in the phone I get next month when I'm due for my upgrade.

The Droid has Bluetooth.

My truck (06 Mitsu Raider) has Chrysler's uConnect system. I'm able to pair my Droid with that and use uConnect's built-in voice dialing without any problems. If your Prius' system handles the dialing on its end, then you shouldn't have any problems.

This issue has been around since android v0.9 or V1.0 whatever the very 1st version was. unfortunately its programming in the Bluetooth stack and I agree it sucks. There is a massive huge thread on the google support forums regarding this. Its not listed as a critical but an acknowledge. There are apps out there but they only work via the built-in microphone. I might pony up the $2-3 because who knows how long this 'fix' will come out. And for the former Blackberry converts out there I feel your pain as I miss my BT Dialing. But these apps act almost identical to a blackberry:
click
Phone: Say a command
You: Dial bob smith
Phone: Did u say bob smith?
You: Yes
Phone: Which Number
You: Mobile
Phone: Dialing

Droiddoes(NOT) bluetooth dial.

I have the KVT512 DVD. Are you saying that you can touch "TEL" or whatever it's called on the 719 touchscreen and a voice says "Say a command" and that you ask to call anyone you have in the contact list of the Droid and the call is placed.

This is the way the Mot ENV3(and an earlier Mot and a Samsung phone) worked with the 512 and the way the Droid works in the Fusion with Microsoft Sync.

Do you know if any of these solutions allow this app to start with a single touch to the face of the Droid?

The "Voice Search" button on the Car Mode screen is useless in this regard as you are taken to a Google search page. What were they thinking?

I installed an app called Voice Dial but after touching the icon and issue a command the confirming question is printed on the screen instead of being spoken making the app a useless plaything.

I can't imagine anyone squinting at a Droid screen as he careens down the freeway.

Hi steve4810,

I know with one of the apps (Cant remember which one) but it has a separate icon u can pop on your screen which overwrites the default voice dialer.
And for those who are interested in this bug tracking here is the link I mentioned earlier:
code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1412

ouch not enuff credibility to post a link..

ncc1701p,

Thanks.

I didn't have enough creditability either when I tried to post a link a few messages back.

Not a feature on 719

No my 719 is older and it has no voice dial, but it syncs up great phonebook, and it has three numbers you can program so its not completely handsfree close enough for me, i would like to see them bust me as it looks like I am changing the radio station or colume so I hit tel button then 1 and phone button and dials the number 1 preset. I wish Kenwood would update their software, or a hack would be nice as since phonebook is stored in stereo on sync that we cold voice dial.
