Is 4GB of RAM large enough for pixel 3 and XL

The answer to your question is: NO, it's not enough

You can always use more RAM

**MORE importantly, what's the remaining RAM after normal moderate usage of the phone??

Answer: If remaining RAM is less than 1GB, then you need more RAM :p

Where did you get this formula? The Pixel usually averages 2.5 running out of 4

Idk.. Having "a couple of apps close" without knowing the conditions, makes me question whether it's RAM issue or not. I mean, does he have 25 apps open orrrr...? (Full disclosure, I don't have a high opinion of DB's perspective... so there's that.)

Where did you get that formula?

How do you know what someone elses phone averages?

This whole RAM issue wasn't even a mention last year.....all of a sudden because other OEMs got into the horsepower race, 4GB is suddenly underwhelming and inadequate. Maybe it is inadequate for some OEMs that layer their UIs with memory hogging artifacts. Does anyone really believe Google didn't test prototypes for memory adequacy?

Obviously I don't have a 3XL yet but if there's an issue based purely on inadequate RAM then it should most likey happen on a 2XL. With a bunch of apps already memory resistant I ran both hi-res streaming and stored files while throwing everything in the camera at it including AR video which is definitely a memory hog. Not one hiccup or lag...I even loaded fortnite with music playing without an issue so I don't believe we can blame RAM alone. I even checked how many apps I still had open and I counted 21.
Could be a fluke or something unique to the P3. Could even be a third party app.

I'll be happy to performing the same tests trying to break things when I get my P3XL

I just watched a video comparing it to a 1 + 6. The pixel 3 was much snappier and faster at starting up apps and loading things but when it came to reloading apps the pixel 3 had to reload some apps all over again I only about 5 apps didn't need reloading before the memory was full. Not a big deal to me and I thought that was going to be the case. Having few apps open will probably also save on the battery.

RAM is always on so the amount of open apps isn't nirmally an issue. Technically having more RAM uses more battery. Using more battery by having more RAM is sometimes offset by less app swapping saving on battery drain so it's a toss up.

I'm sure it's fine, but when competitors are all going higher and for future proofing, they should be 6 or 8.

That's all I have on my Pixel 2 and I've not had any issues. I'm thinking they have figured out a better way to manage it.

Guess the camera uses all of the available ram when taking pictures, so you really can't be doing anything else like streaming music while doing so. Pretty disappointing, as that shouldn't be an issue even with 4 GB of ram, but oh well.

If you would take the time to open Bader's comments, you might find that it only happens under certain circumstances and he doesn't blame the RAM
