Is a case required to protect the camera?

Title says it all. I hate cases but the camera lense protrudes out just a tiny bit compared to the cover. If I lay the phone on its back or even slide it across a counter (who am I kidding, the bar) will it scratch the lense? Or is the lense made of a strong glass like gorilla glass?

Anyone had issues? And have you removed the piece of plastic that encircles the lense?

I would think this was a heavily tested part of the device in regards to common scratches, small drops and sliding around on the table, etc.. If you feel that you maybe doing damage to the lens then you may want to consider a thin case to beef it up a little..

Just got the S4 in today and it is one slippery sucker naked.
