Is a Factory reset necessary b4 update?

Do not factory reset... Leave your device alone and just use it... the upgrade process will take care of everything.

Didn't reset my wife's Maxx , update message appeared last night , actual update download sometime after midnight began (she didn't start it), installed , no issues, no reset....

My work RAZR won't even check for updates (the update check isn't available error that seems to be common) but at this point checking for an update don't think will matter as this deal was pushed to my wife's phone in a different manner than the usual update process.
In fact I thought the notice last night that ics would arrive within a week (also included list of features), she ran to show me as thought it was some sort of malware <wasn't a txt msg> ...

when the soak invite was emailed to me I loaded my stock rom and unrooted. Did a factory reset and wiped everything. Installed last night flawlessly. Be patient during the whole process. Just agree to it and walk away.do not mess with your phone. Many people thought it had frozen and tried shutting down or power cycling. Let it do its thing.

Been running strong all day. Others are complaining of odd circumstances that I could only chalk up to impatience. Also if you are rooted and running a custom rom I'd say revert to stock and remove root. Seems to be causing issues.

If you've never rooted then no worries

You should just be able to select Factory data reset under Settings->Privacy

I didn't reset anything when I did the update and everything went kaboom. Phone was extremely slow, horribly slow to charge (like 6-7 hours to go from 35% to 70%), the battery was draining 2-3x faster than norm, and the phone ran hot. I don't mean it was warm... I mean stove top hot where it actually was hard to touch and kicked in the overheating screen disabling. Tried restarting, disabling apps, etc and nothing helped. Clearly there was something running in the background that wouldn't stop no matter what. Finally just backed up the apps and data (which was a chore because MyBackup Pro was hanging when trying to completely back everything up, had to use 2 different backup apps) and did a complete factory reset. Phone's normal again, running cool, and smooth overall but it took a day to get it back to where it was pre-ICS.

So, I wouldn't necessarily reset pre-update, but if you have problems post update, I would consider a reset sooner rather than later.

I wanna take the phone for repair at Verizon due to issues but I want to put the phone back to factory as I did with my nexus using "odin". Putting the phone back to factory directly through the phone doesn't reinstall it to 100% factory just in case u didn't know.

I had to do a factory reset after the update. I hadn't planned on doing one, but something was causing my phone to run poorly after the update. Not sure what is was. Could have been an app that wasn't compatible with ICS.
After factory reset the problems went away.

We did not reset either of two stock phones yesterday and the update was smooth. A little over 5 min for wifi download and another 5 or 6 for install on each phone.

I kept getting the not available message. After factory reset and checked for updates it immediately came up with the download prompt.

I pulled the ICS update this morning and so far, things seem to be running pretty smoothly. I was definitely prepared to do a factory reset, as I just got my phone two weeks ago, but I don't think it?s necessary. I thought it might be, because when I upgraded my OG Transformer to ICS, I had major problems that only a factory reset could resolve.

Also, I kept getting that "not available" error message when I first tried to check for the update. Then I realized my Wi-Fi was turned off to preserve the battery. Once I turned Wi-Fi on again, I had no trouble pulling the ICS update. Of course, there may be something else going on for those that keep getting this error, but it might be something really simple, too. The update will only download over Wi-Fi, not the 3g/4g Verizon network. :)

I downloaded the update over 3g, it was slow but it worked. I had no other option since ther was no wifi option driving down the road.:)

Like many others, found the ICS update after numerous checks of the "about phone" menu.

Got error message 2 times after downloading over WiFi; message said "could not validate".

Based on other blog posts, completed a FDR (factory data reset - ONLY), and the download went off w/o a hitch. ICS looks good on my Maxx...

It is not required to wipe your phone before the update but is a really good idea immediately after. Most of the users that did not and state they have no problems could start having some in the coming weeks. Combining a new OS with files designed for the previous OS can only cause more problems down the road. I would rather take the time to restore the phone right after upgrading to ICS rather than spending weeks getting it the way I want and have to end up erasing it and starting over again later.

Found I could not set ringtone and lost haptic feedback on the touch screen after the update.

Had to do factory reset :(

Now I will never get that extra space on Plants vs, Zombies!

I feel your pain...I too had to start over on one of my games, 'Where's my Water'!
