Is a Factory reset necessary b4 update?

I have a razr maxx stuck on 2.3.5. I've hard reset the phone twice now and can't get it to update. Please advise.

I wanna take the phone for repair at Verizon due to issues but I want to put the phone back to factory as I did with my nexus using "odin". Putting the phone back to factory directly through the phone doesn't reinstall it to 100% factory just in case u didn't know.

This has nothing to do with an update but I'm taking this to the store and they know at my verizon store superuser is a rooted app so I need to completely restore my razr maxx any help will be appreciated.

Sorry, but my update didn't really update all of the ICS features until I did a factory reset. The difference was unreal.

To clarify, got update last Saturday. Read about issues on this Forum for a week and did the reset Friday. I did not loose anything! Battery is much better and all features are now on the phone.

How did you manage to do a reset and not lose anything? Are you sure it was a reset
