Is anyone going to switch to the Surface?

I think I'll definitely check it out. Don't think I'd be willing to part with my nexus though. Like another user said, the portability accompanied by the functionality is just something I'm not willing to give up.

Then again I may never get the surface because I also have an iPad 2. So...yeah I'm pretty set as far as tablets go.

I'll probably get a Surface Pro to replace my laptop and iPad for heavy duty mobile computing. I hate the limitations the iPad imposes but love the portability of the form factor. I do hope the Pro can get at least 6-7 hours of useful battery life as well though. I think the longer battery life is a major game changer in how people use these devices.

At the same time, I'll probably get a Nexus 7 as well for reading/content consumption.

So basically the iPad will get split into a Surface Pro for heavier duties and a Nexus 7 for lighter duty.

I was just wondering about this because when the surface was announced many android users were excited about it and wanted to jump ship to it. But then the nexus 7 was announced and every android fan rejoiced and rushed to the play store to pre order one. I thought 7 in was too small for a tablet, but then I got the nexus 7 and I like 7in a lot more than 10 inches. It's mainly the portability that seals the deal for me. The only edge that the surface has, at least IMO, is that it is almost like a real PC, except in a tablet. The surface will probably have the best Microsoft office integration available, but that's it. The app ecosystem is probably not as good as the play store, and the surface might be too big, and too much like a PC to carry around. So, are any of you nexus 7 owners going to switch to the surface when it comes out?

The ecosystem makes this a fascinating question. I thought about it and realized what differentiates the tab (either Android or iOS, or even QNX) from a Windows tab, and this is it. Windows is a general purpose system, with generalized, larger scale applications like Word, Excel and whatever else you run. They are multi-hundred megabyte monsters with a million features intended to do something multi-faceted and in depth. A tab will run a single, tightly focused app, like a calculator or a game, bookreader, or file transfer app or whatever. In other words very narrow, very well defined, single purpose. The apps are, by modern PC standards, tiny. This makes me wonder just how well the Surface will do. If it's going to want to be a laptop replacement, it's doesn't seem to me that it will be a very good one. The small keyboard can't be comfortable to use for long typing sessions, the screen will be confining. On the other hand if it's going to be a tab with a keyboard option like the Asus Transformer, then it will need an app ecosystem which does not exist.

I think I just talked myself out of buying one.

One of the reasons I jumped ship from full-size Android tablets is the lacking app ecosystem. The primary reason being Google's foolish attitude that phone apps are just fine on a 10" tablet. So IMO, the Android tablet app ecosystem barely exists. It's probably gotten better since I last had a 10" Android tablet but the iPad app ecosystem is still orders of magnitude better.

On the other hand, while the Surface Metro ecosystem does not exist yet, I have a better hope that it'll catch up and surpass Android's table ecosystem.

If the rumored $200 price is real (which I doubt), I'll get one. Though I'm sure the selection of apps will prevent it from replacing my Nexus 7 anytime soon.

yeah...but then there's the Surface Pro

The Surface Pro is not a tablet in the current iteration but a UMPC in a tablet form easily going to be priced around $1000.00. UMPC and tablet/laptop convertibles have been out for decades and I don't see how they compare with the Nexus 7. It is like comparing a Semi-truck to a half-ton civilian truck two completely different leagues.

Correct me if im wrong, WIndows Surface RT will be Microsofts answer to tablets. Wont the Surface RT only run Metro/Tablet apps? Isnt that what differentiates it from the Pro? Isnt the Pro more of the laptop replacement tablet that runs all the legacy apps? But to answer the OP`s question, im enjoying my Nexus 7 so much that I don`t see myself buying or even considering another tablet for a long time. I was convince that if a iPad Mini actually came out I would purchase one. Not so much anymore.

If the surface is priced at $200, then that will just be the tablet. I'm sure that the keyboard would cost another $50-$100, or so. It just doesn't seem like this rumor is true.

Remember Windows tablets will come in two varieties: Arm and x86 based. The x86 tablets, Windows 8 compatibility issues aside, should be compatible with Windows programs. Hard to consider a more complete echo system than that...

Nothing from Microsoft impresses me lately. Ever since Gates left and Ballmer took over, the freebees are gone, and their products cost a fortune. I just got another 14 critical updates this morning. Windows 8 is looking like a disaster.

Bottom Line: I'm happy with my Nexus 7. I doubt MS will price the surface competitively to even consider. The Pro version I understand won't be a laptop replacement. There is nothing compelling to go out and buy it.

I'm looking forward to the surface specifically for work purposes. I think the surface is going to completely take the business market from the ipad, at least in markets where the windows operating system is dominant. As was stated in a previous post, it will be great to have a windows integrated tablet for business environments.

I wouldn't bet on that. iPad proliferation in the work place is of the emerging BYOD phenomenon, not necessarily handouts from the technology department. So will the Surface PRO curtail sales of iPads? Nope.

Am I getting a x86 Surface? F'k yeah!

I'm with you on Windows 8. I really like Windows 7, but seeing Windows 8 in action on a PC gives me nightmares. On a tablet, maybe it works and I won't rule it out. But I truly think MS is going to have a catastrophe on their hands when people upgrade.

I'll definitely stick with the Nexus7. Later this year I will just buy an Ultrabook to run Win8 and to do all my work.

I'm in for sure for $200 but like you said I highly doubt it. Heck even $300 I'd get one to replace our netbook. I will be keeping my Nexus as IMO they are two different devices intended for different purposes.

I'm buying the surface for business uses. And I'm keeping the nexus 7 for home use.
