Is Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 considered old? Are new Tabs better?

I am getting my first tablet (Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 32GB WiFi) Monday.
I got it for $329 and now when I go back to the site it says its discontinued.

Will this tablet get Lollipop and is it still better than the new Tab4s?
The specs look better than most but is it considered an old tablet?

Thanks in advance.
:)

Welcome to Android Central! I don't know about Lollipop, although I would guess that a higher-end 2014 device from Samsung would have a very good chance of getting it.

Here's a good comparison between the Note 10.1 2014 and the Tab 4 10.1: Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 vs Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) - Phone specs comparison. The Note 10.1 is significantly better, in terms of resolution, processor power, and camera quality. The S Pen is an added feature as well. The Tab 4 is more of a midrange device, maybe even entry level in some respects--for example, it lacks MHL support (which is an adapter for the microUSB port that allows it to connect to the HDMI port of a TV). The Note 10.1 does have MHL support.

Thank you for the post OP, as I am curious as well. I have been looking at the Note 10.1 2014 for a long time, just not ready to purchase yet. Wow where did you get it from for that price and is that new or refurbished? The Tab models are all newer and Costco has some great prices, but none have the Note/Spen features and it just seems to me that they are pushing the 'Tab' models more than the 'Note' models.

The Note line is made for those that need it for the their daily use. If you can live without it, then I would go with the latest tablets out there.

Thanks for the replies.
I got it and bhphotvideo. It was a 16G but they upgraded to 32G for free because it was out of stock. Then I saw a black friday deal and emailed them and they took more money off. I have bought some stuff from them before and they are awesome about returns and prices (some stuff is cheaper than amazon). Their free shipping is also faster.
I want to use it to draw on so I think I got the right one
The site also said discontinued by manufacturer.

Good deal! The thing about devices (especially Samsung devices) is that there's always going to be a newer version out in another year. So many devices will be discontinued after about a year or a year and a half, depending on the situation. I wouldn't worry too much about that issue.

Samsung is still selling them as is Amazon. But I guess the whole s-pen feature did not catch on as widely as expected, and the only new model is the pro, which is 12", that's too big for a tablet for me. They seem to be moving towards pushing the Tabs. Bummer. I would consider a updated note, with a10"screen. I have become so enamored of the s pen, I don't go a day without using it for something.

Yippeee UPS normally shows up at 5 or 6 o'clock.
Today they showed up at noon.
How long to charge? How do I know when its charged?

Yep it is brand new for 329. Watch next week they will be 250 lol.
Thanks for the replies.

With charger/cable plugged in hold down "menu" button (directly above USB cable connector) till you see image of battery on screen, amount of green in battery shows amount of charge, if dots (below battery image) are moving unit is still charging, if 100% is across battery, its done....... Other wise turn tablet on and look in top right hand corner of screen for percentage charge..

Glad I found this forum.

Glad I found this forum.

Most if not all of the people who reported that it took 8hours or more to charge had either a defective tablet or a defective charger. Under normal conditions if should not take that long.

It only took two hours or less to charge. Too bad the screen will not wake up like its supposed to. I can't find anything near as nice as this tablet for what I paid for it. Now its discontinued where I bought it from so I'm sol. Back to spiral notebooks for a while. :(

When the screen is off(on sleep mode) do you press the home button to turn it back on?
You can turn it on in 3 easy ways:
1 plug it in to a computer or wall charger to charge it
2 press the power button
3 press the home button

Do you use a case/stand for your tablet?
If so opening the cover can also turn the screen on.
If it is a bad case then the case could be the issue.

Definitely the screen. No case, totally naked. It would stay black upon waking. You could hear it making sounds from swipes etc. When I took the Spen out it would make the sound effects but the screen was just black like no power to the screen. Also brightness control didn't work. Other than that awesome tablet.
People with the same symptoms said it was a loose ribbon cable. I love the tablet but I'm not going to get a brand new tablet repaired (might as well have purchased refurb). Oh well, at least I found a good forum.

Have you considered repairing the loose ribbon. They gave instructions in the thread.

Here is the thread with the solution.

Wow that is horrible, not working right out of the box! Why wouldn't you at least return it for a refund if they don't have more to exchange it?

I am returning it for a refund. It just stinks because I got such a deal I cannot afford anything close to this tablet.
Thanks for the link to the fix, I am so tempted but I don't want to screw up and then not be able to return it. I screwed up a Wii putting in a mod chip that involved the ribbon cables so I am paranoid. When I unlatched it the plastic latch totally came off.

Thanks again for the help.

Check on Amazon.com, I got a used 16gig for 300 that works just fine. I now use it to take all of my notes in class and have started drawing on it. I think that they are like 400 brand new but not really sure. Sorry about that happening to you; that really does such.
