Is getting a galaxy nexus now a good idea?

Hey, I have had the Gnex for about 6 months now and I must say it is a wonderful phone! I have an extra battery ($8) for it and I use it all day. Since buying it I have no ambitions to upgrade, unless there is abetter phone out there with stock android. Jelly Bean is just that good. If you want good software, go for it man! But there are some hardware issues with the phone....sad part I know. The speakerphone blows, just absolutely blows, The AMOLED screen is not the brightest, and the GPS on it sometimes won't pick up. But, like I said, I would not upgrade right now Unless there was a better phone out there for me.

Hope this helped!

Take it from me: I have been using the Galaxy Nexus for 10 months and have ABSOLUTELY NO REGRETS. This is also the first phone that has spent 10 months with me. During this duration HTC One X and Galaxy S3 attracted me, but....as an overall package, GN is hard to beat. It is a picture of understated elegance, and the navigation softkeys alone make it worthwhile. With Jelly Bean, it is ALMOST as fast as S3 and Note2. And while its camera might be 5 MP, it also has 0 shutter lag.

As others said, it's the software. Stock Jelly Bean is beautiful, and once you use it it makes it harder to turn away. With Project Butter, you'd almost never feel the need for a couple more cores or RAM. The difference is so pronounced, even live wallpapers which previously caused my GNex to stutter, now run buttery smooth. It's phenomenal. 3 months down the line, it still makes my heart flutter every time I use it.

That said, I am thrilled to contemplate what a quad core processor will do with AOSP JB, a la next Nexus. I am not overly concerned about it being made by LG, but at this point in time GNexus is already quite cheap. In my humble opinion, you can buy it and still sell it for a very good price if you decide to plump for the LG Nexus.

I bought my GNex in August for 99.00 from Sprint. if the Nexus 4 had been out then I would have still gone with the GNex.. I don't have to have the newest and shiniest. The Gnex is more than adequate for my needs and wants.

Yeah, I broke my Galaxy Nexus last week and thought about getting the Galaxy S3. I researched it for a while and played with one at Best Buy and realized Touchwiz is just not for me. Ended up getting a refurbished gnex on ebay.

nithinthomas91, I'd just wait. The LG Nexus 4 leaks we've seen this week serve as mere rumors at worst, non-finalized specs/hardware at best. There could very well be a 16GB or possibly a 32GB model that we just don't know about yet. Plus, it's rumored other manufacturers are making their own Nexus smartphones, too. We still need to see if that's true or not. We could be looking at pics of prototype hardware that isn't necessarily indicative of the final Nexus 4 product released to customers. You'll probably remember seeing pics of what was believed to be the iPhone 5 back in Feb/Mar of this year where the 'home' button was touchscreen...and that's totally not true of the iPhone 5 in stores now. I could definitely be wrong but with each Nexus phone possessing noticeable improvements over the previous model(s), I can't really see Google disappointing its diehard fanbase with a backwards phone. I hope we see final specs that we can all be generally happy with.

Wow. Thanks a lot guys. I didn't expect SO many responses. Really. Thanks. :D

After reading all the replies, I can tell you guys really love your GNs despite its shortcomings like the camera, battery and the GPS. I haven't seen ANY other phone getting this kind of praise from its owners. Reading this just makes this phone that much more desirable and I'm REALLY tempted to get it now.

But since severinj mentioned the possibility of a price drop (which i didn't think of before, for some reason), I think i'll wait because we don't have contracts here in my country. We have to get phones unsubsidised. :\

But, since this is the case now, I think I'll wait to see what the LG nexus brings and (hopefully) the updated Galaxy Nexus 2 or plus or whatever its gonna be called. Its supposed to have an updated camera and a faster (overclocked) processor. I hope they make the battery larger too. :P

I'm also hoping that Google will just replace the current Galaxy nexus with this rumored, updated GN2 (i9260) for the same price( or lower :P).

Bought mine last month (got the GSM model and T-Mo prepaid) and no regrets here. It was a HUGE upgrade from my old Epic 4G on Sprint. It's my first smartphone without a hard keyboard, but given how big the screen is on the G-Nex, I don't really miss it much.

Thanks capn. :) But, a HUGER upgrade would be if i switched to a gnex from my tiny Xperia X10 Mini pro running CM10. Haha... :D

If it's about money or timing, you want something cheap or just want it now. Galaxy Nexus isn't bad. And it's TI OMAP 4460 processor did get some new life thanks to Jelly Bean, it feels pretty responsive.

But I think your reasons for not getting the Nexus 4 don't sound very good. The design of the phone and lack of removable battery. They are your reasons and if those two things are showstoppers for you, then I can't change your mind. But I think the Nexus 4 does look quite a bit like the Galaxy Nexus, has the same general shape, looks identical from the front, it's the back that got changed, it's flat glass back with pattern. If you hate that pattern this much, I'm sure a skin can be easily applied to it. Personally I love the look of the Nexus 4.

The Snapdragon S4 Pro is a huge performance leap over the OMAP 4 4460. This will certainly keep the new Nexus 4 relevant a lot longer than the Galaxy Nexus.

Haha. I know. Design may not be very good reason to pick one phone over another. But its soooo beautiful. :') And i know its too early to say this, but the sparkly rear panel on the LGnex is kind of a turn off. I don't really mind the non removable battery, but only if the battery life is good.

But the S4 pro. This is one thing I wouldn't mind overlooking the back and the battery for. This makes it hard for me to choose again. The idea of an having THE most powerful processor in the market is quite tempting. I just hope that this is priced right (unlocked), but i highly doubt if it'll be priced like the Gnex is now. :\

Hi guys.

With the new LG nexus coming up, do you think the Galaxy Nexus would be a good buy NOW?

While I have nothing against LG or the fact that its making the next nexus phone, I just don't find the LG nexus's design as appealing as the SGN's. The non-removable battery is also kind of a turn off.

I love the design of the SGN and was seriously hoping for Samsung to just upgrade the internals while retaining the current design. But, I guess its not happening. :(

Do you think it would be smart to get the SGN at a time like this, RIGHT before the next nexus phone is released? I really like this phone. But my main concern is that i'll be getting it at a time when its about to go obsolete.

It depends what carrier you are on, the LG Nexus is only going to work on att/ t-mo. and its weakest point is it may only have 8GB of storage, which means you'll be streaming everthing from the cloud storage like drive and play or what ever you use. There are also more new Nexus devices to come out before the year is over, Motorola, Samsung Galaxy Nexus 2, HTC, and maybe Sony. I'm on vzw and hoping I hear a Moto Nexus on vzw soon, if so I'll sell my old one. All the new Nexus phones are going to have faster processors and more ram with better screens in HD, and probably better battery life, but storage may be sacrificed "to keep cost down" allegedly. But the Gnex is a great 2-3 year phone right now, and will be updated for another couple years.

Also you can get a used nexus from ebay, but most people swear the best deals are at swappa for used phones. I'd get a used Samsung Galaxy Nexus if you're looking. And if you have unlimited, any new subsidized phone on Vzw is going to make you get a tiered contract, which are a rip if you have unlimited data. And the only way to keep unlimited on vzw is to buy a used lte phone or one at full retail.

So if you need one now, buy a used Galaxy Nexus from ebay or swappa, if you can wait, wait till all the other Nexus phones are announced a little later this year. Just remember research, research, research to have the best advantage on a new phone that will keep you satisfied for 2-3 years.

After reading over this thread, I decided to pull the trigger and buy a new Galaxy Nexus from the Play Store. I bought a GNex on launch day, but do to some unfortunate circumstances, I have been stuck with an HTC Droid Incredible for the last few months of Verizon. I just ordered a SIM from T-Mobile, and hope to have my new old phone in my hand in a few days. If the next Nexus phone is priced similarly to this one, I may just have to pick one of those next month or whenever they launch.

I purchased a Galaxy Nexus from Verizon back in January of this year, and I have to say that despite the 3 - 6 month lag in updates from VZW (I unlocked, rooted and flashed a JB ROM until the official OTA update was released) I have been very impressed with the device. Also, I know the specs for the camera isn't great, but I think it takes decent photos, for a phone. If you want higher quality pics, use a point & shoot.

Maybe not just now.., me thinks they might have to dump inventory when the new lg nexus arrives. Specs are fine but if there is a fire sale on gnexes that might be the time buy!

Yeah if you're on Verizon and don't wanna leave do it! I highly doubt Verizon will ever get another nexus, and while updates aren't quite as nice, it has full aosp support!

I really don't understand your logic. It appears that you didn't read over this thread. Some people, including myself, told the OP to wait till after the next Nexus to be revealed because Google may lower the price of the GN (as it did when the Nexus 7 came out). The next device is rumored to be unveiled out on October 28. Today is the 11th, which makes that 17 days until it's potential unveiling. If you order your GN today, you'll be paying 350 + shipping + tax. What if the GN goes to 300 on October 28? You could have saved 50+ dollars. If the next Nexus is so awesome that you cannot pass it up, you'll buy that one and you have a GN that you don't want to use, thus potentially wasting 350+tax+shipping. To make up for it, you'll have to put it up on eBay or something. Why don't you just wait until October 28? The HTC Droid Incredible is a fine phone and I'm sure it can last up until October 28.

I just ordered one off of ebay. I like to run custom ROMs and my EVO3D has less than stellar developer support and has been acting twitchy. My wife and I are both on Sprint and want to switch to VZW. However, our contract isn't up until November 2013 (Her GSII upgrade). I chose the GNex because I thought it would have the longest usable lifespan and hey, it was only $180 off contract.

Aw man.This blows.

The i9260 is NOT an updated Gnex after all. Its just some crappy mid range Touchwiz sammy. This SUCKS! :\

Samsung GT-i9260 Galaxy Premier revealed in leaked image | Android Central

Guess it just the LG nexus I have to wait for now. But, from the looks of the new leaked pics, it looks a lot like the current Gnex, except, a little flatter. I'm starting to like it a little bit. :D

My only concerns now are the sparkly back plate and the limited storage. Just hope its prices right. :)

Can't wait for oct 28th. :D

$180??? Off contract??

That is brilliant man. :O Can i get it for that price outside the US?

Yeah what a stupid device! Another way for Samsung to confuse the market, as if they don't have enough phones as it is
