Is Google+ needed for an Android?

I don't want to use Google+, but do all the Android features need a Google+ account to use/enjoy? I hope not...

No, Google+ isn't required. You can disable it if you want, but keep in mind that the Photos app is part of Google+, so if you disable Google+ and your phone doesn't have another Gallery app, then you'll need to install another 3rd party gallery app like QuickPic.
